I bought my 16 year old son a 1997 Chevy S10 as his first truck. I know it doesn't have the wow factor but I got it dirt cheap... Turns out that was for a reason since i bought it on the internet site unseen outside of a few pics. total spent on this truck was 1500 plus shipping since it was out of state 600. we've already done some things to it but the big stuff are the transmission and engine. 192,000 miles and counting.here are the photo's from the add when i bought it. looked like it had a cool looking after market exhaust. My son that it was nice and added to the look of the truck.https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/10385380_10202301198804760_4018955068560169699_n.jpgthere appeared to be a little damage on the front left fenderhttps://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/t1.0-9/10540397_10202301198924763_349970009205817867_n.jpgBut when the truck showed up it was a different story. I drove it to the house from where the shipper dropped it off and the vibration and noise this exhaust was making was crazy. I get up and under the truck and see this. Then I pop the hood and notice Wires everywhere from a sound system that the previous owner had ripped out of the truck. He even had a wire sticking in the fuse box to bypass a fuse.So far we have replaced the non existing exhaust with a stock one, tried to order a kit online but it never came so i just took it to a muffler shop and they did it pretty cheap. $160.00Ive replaced the damaged hood and left fender with the same from a u-pull-it for about $80.00Painted the hood to match the truck myself cost was $100.00 (used aerosol cans but it cleaned up pretty good )https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t1.0-9/10445943_10202301232325598_6161180561839435619_n.jpgReplaced front grill (which was broken from an accident and held on with duct tape which i couldn't see in the photo's) 45$Replaced broken turn signal indicators and rear tail lights total 80$Replaced Steering gearbox and center drag link 100$So far i'm into this truck for 2665$, but the cost for a replacement transmission (5 speed standard) is probably going to be around 600$ and an engine rebuild isn't going to be cheap. I want to do it myself but still there is only so much i can do here.any suggestions on the latter two? I'm hoping the experience i get doing this truck is going to give me more opportunities to get into more classic restoration work but i figure since I haven't done any of this kind of work before I would start here.
not sure why it won't show the other pics. but the last work I did on the truck was replacing the steering gearbox, the truck had about two and a half inches of play in the steering. really bad. Next job I think is going to be the gas tank which needs to be dropped and the fuel sensor needs to either be replaced or checked. for some reason it is always showing full on the console.
Get this I posted that same photo on another forum and it was pointed out to me that the springs are bad, I went and looked at the rear springs and sure enough they were bad. Then while i was under there I noted that the seal plate on the differential was leaking. So there goes my next project on restoring the s10Click here to keep up with the work being done on the 97 Chevy S10
