OK here is a question.I have a 1966 Chevelle Malibu.I have the body off the frame. While it is off.I would like to change the column shifter to a floor shifter.I have a 2 speed powerglide tranny. What do I need to make that change. If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Thanks John
are you keeping the bench seat??or do you have bucket seats with the column shift..??floor shifters usually came with bucket seats and consoles.. there are dozens of cable type floor shifters.. if you wanted to really complete the column to floor shift swap. you would probably want to find a floor shift column.. i wonder if the 68 floor shift columns would fit.. as i think that they went to a collapsable column in 68.. 69 got the key on the column. you have a lot of column options also. wow.. what a bunch of interiors to select fromhttps://www.google.com/search?q=1966+chevelle+interior&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=IyClU_-wGo3ooATI0IGgDA&ved=0CBwQsAQ&biw=1199&bih=876have a look..
I have the original bench seat.Im gonna keep that. The tranny is a 2 speed power glide.Just wanted to know if there was linkage I needed to just change over.
it depends on the shifter..original shifters were lever and rod type.. cable shifters did not come out till later as i recall.. be sure to select a shifter that has the detent plate for a power glide..are you going with an after market shifter??? there are A BUNCH.. and you may need to build /fab a box up to mount it on.. more info on what shifter you may be planning on using.. there are SO MANY possiblities.. and end use of the car.. street .. street strip.. strip only.. do you have kids.. do you have pets.. the last two.. as some cheep older shifters really don't lock into either PARK or into drive as good as i would like.. so a knocked knee or a kid or pet jumping around can knock it from drive to reverse or drive to park..
No young children No animals. But I thought there was a linkage I could bolt on to the tranny and possibly run it to the stearing column under the hood when I shift the floor shifter it would shift the column also and just take off the shifter handle inside near the stearing wheel.I not trying to be cheap.everything im doing to the car is costing me more then I can afford.I just don't want to right now buy a stearing column without the handle right now.just trying I guess for the easyway of having a floor shifter instead of a column shifter
This sight I just wrote a 5 min answer and it was lost.Ill write it again tomorrow..lol
hmm...the server has issues that the proper IT staff has not been able to fix.. so double posts we go. well.. yes.. that is a feature on later models.. that had a key on the column .. starting around 1969 until probably the late 70s.. perhaps this will help...http://www.shiftworks.com/chevelle-64-67.htm
