Hi, guys I'm new to this forum my names Jesse, lol... OK, I've got a problem I am recovering my classic mini's rail with vinyl everything is going well, but I can not figure out a way to fold the corners without making it look ugly. Do any of you guys now a way to do so and making it look beautiful, haha... Oh, and the ash tray too. Anything advice would help, thank you.just to give you guys an idea of the shape of the dash rail this is what i want it to look like. This is the ash tray hole, any ideas of how to fold/cut it?
i am taking that you may have noticed what seems to be clips that hold the original material to the dash ...the end folds seem to be done first with some stretch to the material.. perhaps some heat..you might want to carve something the length of a the dash.. perhaps a 2x4... and back cut the ends.. and use a heat gun to preform the ends of the material... if you are working in vinyl...makes you wonder if the mini factory did not use some kind of vacuum thermal forming...take a look at the just dashes web site .. how they thermally soften the material in a frame.. then drop it over the dash and apply vacuum ... once it sets.. they use heat guns and some creative trimming to fold the corners.. you might be able to use a shop vacuum stretch the material with a 2x4 frame.. dropped over a vacuum base box with the dash core laying on it.. spray glue in areas applied with forethought..
A good trick is heat with heat gun till warm and stretch. Just do not over heat if the material turns shiny stop heating quick. Also make sure you apply the vinyl with the stretch side working with the sharp angles .A great trick that works with most vinyls and leathers is super glue....Good Luck Eddie Barrett Seat Company
