I’ve been reading the ‘Ask Anything’ column for a while and figured to ask.
I have a ’74 K5 Blazer. It’s mostly an off road truck, it has the usual stuff. Dana 60/14/bolt with 4.88 gears and spools at each end running on 37’s on 16.5 hummer double bead lock steel wheels. 700R4/205 with a twin stick and an 1800 stall converter.
It has a crate motor, GM 1256858, I changed the stock heads to the Vortec heads with the bee hive springs, CCA-26918 and retainers. It has a Professional Products intake, 52006 and a Comp cam 4x4 Extreme cam, CCA-08-411-8. All this goes through the Flowtech headers, 49152-1FLT and the Flowmaster 50’s out back. I’m using a 750 cfm Q-jet with a K&N air cleaner and a stock HEI with MSD coil and 8MM wires. The truck weighs in at 7100 lbs.
My question is torque and HP. I want more, like 375-400 Hp. I’ve seen quite a few motors that advertise 350-400 Hp.
After reading the parts list on those I think I’m pretty close. What would be the next thing to achieve those numbers or move into a LQ4/LQ9 with a with a carb and new Hot Cam. That should be about 480 Hp.

My money would go to a good set of aftermarket heads like AFR 190 or 195. Then a cam with an .050 duration of ~220*.

68scott385, thanks for the input. i looked those heads and they seem to be the real deal. out flowing the fast burn's from Chevy also. my cam has 210@.050, so the next move is too step up i guess.

I looked up your cam's specs. It looks to me that the current cam and heads are a good match. Being an oem part, Vortecs are not designed to run over 5000rpm. I've seen more than one builder/tester say that the Vortecs run out of flow in that rpm range, however they are very good heads for lower rpm range power production.

You could probably sell the heads and cam after the swap to recoup part of your investment. For a daily driven, mild mannered street car, Vortec heads are well worth the effort, IMO.

I only have a 2 bolt main. I think for the time being I'll stick this out with the current set up. now i know of the Trick Flow heads and the different Cam can make more power and torque, i'll tailor my extra motor for that set up and use it. thanks for the help.
