I have a 1992 Chev truck, 5.7 liter. All the goodies that will work with what is currently installed; headers, MSD spark box and a chip. I want to upgrade the cam,but the guys at Comp Cams tell me with what I have as far as throttle body injection, I cannot get any additional gains. I want to remove the TBI, manifold and distributor and go back with Edelbrock intake and fuel, and MSD ignition. Anyone have other ideas or suggestions?
there are several improvements availablevortec heads... vortec tbi intake.. or vortec 4 barrel intake and a tbi adaptor plate.. so if you don't like it.. you can go to a 4 barrel... carb or one of the aftermarket fuel injection systems. that bolt to the holley flange... there are also Holley TBI units to increase stuff. stroker 383 small blocks also wake up the TBI motors when vortec heads are used.. this does require at least a fuel injector swap... from the 5.7 to the 9C1 5.7 police car injectors or the smaller of the 2 used on 7.4 TBI motors to keep the increase in displacement fueled.. there are some articles on TBI upgrades over in the truck magazines on this site also..if you are still around... and reply.. i will look around for some TBI articles.. or type TBI into the search window above and then after the first search.. pull down to either the performance group.. or the third option.. source internet.. that will search all the 40+ car and truck magazines on this site..
I am really wanting to get totally away from EFI. I am now curious if I will also need to swap tranny's as I currently have the 4L60E. If I change out the EFI for carb, swap out distributor to vacuum and mechanical advance, how will the electronics in the trans now operate?
Companies such as TCI or B&M make stand-alone computer controllers for the electronic transmissions.
