ok so i started working on the mustang and have a question. first off when i get it running how long should i let it idle before shutting it off and changing all the fluids? 2nd, one of the spark plugs (cy 4) there is like an acu bracket in the way of the getting the wrench in there, but the bracket looks like it is suppose to be hooked up to something and it's broke off. the bracket connects under the ACU and i would need to take it off to move the bracket. i noticed there are 2 bolts holding the ACU on...is it just those 2? i can post pictures if there is any confusion.
post pictures on photobucket use the links that start with IMG to paste here ...spark plugs on those can be a PAIN.. .. universal joints or ball end extensions.. can be a HUGE help.. short ball swivel spark plug sockets are also available.. i have one that is a double ball swivel in 5/8.. that with a wobble extension can almost get me 90 degrees of bend.. if you notice the ends.. they are ball shaped.. so any socket or extension installed on them can wobble a few degrees...its been almost 20 years since i changed the spark plugs in a 2.8 V6 mustang.. as a former GF had a 78 with the 2.8 .. i managed to get given a 74 2.3 4 speed fast back.. but was never able to get enough time to put it all back together.. i had 2 camaros at that point..
ok. except the joint thing is right in front of the plug, like a socket alone wont fit. i might either just have to cut it out or take the ACU out, move the joint, an do the plug. but taking that route would also need me to remove the belts, therefore hav9ing to mess with the tentioner so i'm not looking into that...
If getting the socket on the plug is an issue, Matco has these. Wondered if y'all have seen them. I bought them because of a header clearance issue, and you can tilt 'em right in there. They are intended for use with a wrench.How long to leave it running? Well, what did you work on? New engine or what?
Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and get in deep to do what should be an easy job. Yes it sux and we've all been there, it's that wonderful mid-70s engineering thinking.If it was mine, I wouldn't let it run more than a minute or two on the old fluids. You got it running, that's great. Now put new fluids in it to keep from hurting it. If it's old enough to have a flat-tappet cam, and it is and probably does, (not a blue oval man) make sure to get some zinc additive to go with the fresh oil change. Yes the zinc additive is expensive for what it is but it's a bucket-load cheaper than rebuilding a motor because the cam got eaten.

alright well i just ended up cutting the bracket out. It let me get to the plug no problem. I put some oil down each cylinder and am waiting for that to settle before I hand crank it. then I will be able to buy a battery for it in about 2 weeks after my house sitting job

man.. now i remember that spark plug.. its still not the hardest spark plug i ever had to fight to get to..late 60s big block chrysler full size... i used to jack up the car and get at them from the underside..late 70s firebirds and transams with the 403 engines.. the last spark plug on the passenger side..had to go in thru the wheel wells... with multi flex spark plug socketsford taurus V6.. windstar V6.. voyager V6... because of my arm size... BIG AND THICK.. i have to remove the upper intakes to get the back 3 spark plugs out.. 4.1, 4.5, 4.9 caddy front wheel drives.. the rear spark plugs.. always a pain.. i actually have a craftsman tool... its just a square wire hook... to reach behind the spark plug boots with a curve and a loop for a finger... they don't make that tool anymore darn them.. i have a heck of a time keeping it in my tool box.. it used to get borrowed way too often and i would have to track it down in other guys tool boxes..
i seem to recall that there is just one bolt holding that bracket to the bottom of the compressor ...i could be wrong...unbolt before cutting.. just like you unbolted the upper bracket..
On the topic of hard to get to plugs, I had an Astro van that I had to remove the front wheels to get to all the plugs. I could get to some by pulling the doghouse out but the front plug on either side required going through the wheel well.The FWD v6 GM cars were all a PITA, IMO.TB, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger and hopefully wiser. As you make progress on this car you will learn many things that will help you on future projects. The pride that comes with saying you did it yourself never gets old.
yeah sure I will get on the pictures soon, my camera ran out of battery before I could get any more. well anyway I cut the bracket out and got to all the plugs. I hand cranked it today. it is not seized. but I tried to unbolt the bracket off the compressor but After I unbolted the compressor it would not move! it is either glued on or something else is holding it so i decided to worry about that later and not make a bigger mess then I already have and just cut it out.
