I am trying to restore a 63 chevy impala. I have a lot of rust on the frame. I was told that a frame on a 91 caprice is the same except for having to add a brace across the front end. has anyone got any info or experience with this?
I'm not sure about that. GM with all the full perimeter frame cars are usually interchangeable. I don't know if the 91 Caprice may have a C-Channel Frame as yours is a Box-Frame. Take a ride to the junkyard, I'm sure those guys can help you. I'm not possitive about the difference. Maybe the Police cruisers were also different too with the 91 Caprice.Bob
The '61 through '64 has an "X" frame. The 65-up has a perimiter, or ladder frame. Body mount locations might be similar. This is a '64 frame.
91 to 93 caprice 4 door frame..i don't think its going to FIT. i am not saying its not possible.. anything thing is possible.. just takes more money... if you are RESTORING the 63.. swapping in a NON STOCK frame kinda ENDS your restoration and becomes an UP GRADE.. or a hot rodded..my boss flew to mexico for a few days.. drove to a town out in the middle of nowhere to see this old caddy that was quite valuable.. when he got there.. it was driving around on a FORD PICK up twin I beam frame.. man was he mad.. it also had the ford truck motor transmission and rear end under it.. seems a 59 caddy is about the right size to fit a pickup truck.. at that point in time about 25 years ago. 59 caddys were selling for over 100K
Thanks guys. I think I may have gotten bad info on the caprice. I've been having trouble finding a 63 frame. I'll keep looking.
i don't have a hollander interchange on 60s GM models..but i would think that some of the other full size might interchange...depending on where the RUST is.. it might be repairable..63 chevy's are quite popular... so keep searching..now.. if you wanted to Graft the front of a donor frame on to the X frame.. that just takes some measuring..edit...one wonders... about the fit.. seems there are several aftermarket frames available..http://www.progressiveautomotive.com/61CX.htm
lets look at some photos i am borrowing from idrivejunk..
i drive junk sent me this link for a cheep impala body and frame... no title though.. so its quasi legal.. be sure to take a web enabled phone.. and check the vin at the NICB vin check site.. google it.. to make sure its NOT STOLEN.. thats all you would need.. getting pulled over with a stolen stripped car on your trailer...http://fayar.craigslist.org/pts/3366241929.html
Theres a pretty big difference in wheelbase between those two. Wayne, thats good advice on the old car bodies and frames. You don't want a hot one!
