74javelin welcome aboard:

Go with the 454 there are a lot of go fast parts available for it. The 401 is an expensive engine to get parts for. Hope that answer's your Question....

To keep the car somewhat original looking, 360 small chamber heads will bolt on your 401.,. IF, you ream the 7/16" head bolt holes to 1/2"
You can still get cams or get your's reground with almost any profile and re parkerized.
Parts are hard to come by for AMC, so the Chevy route might be the way to go.

I know I'm new on this forum, but this IS CarCraft..here's my thought..
If your first car was a 401 powered 74 Javelin, I think you've answered your own question..it doesn't sound like you're after a resto, nor a drag-only car..trying to build it as a good all-around driver?? If so, yes, the 454,due to parts availability, and all around power.A resto-mod?? then prob'ly the 401..It's your car,so Car Craft it your way!!(my first car was an uncompleted '55 Opel 2-door station wagon I was TRYING to stuff a Stude v-8 into, so what's that tell ya??!Thank the Lord for '55 chevy 2-doors{my 2nd car!!})
been a C-C'er since they was little!
