I am building a 383 right now and it is time to get the heads I am going to be running a comp magnum roller 280 its specs are 280 adv 224 @0.050 and .525 lift with a 2,000 – 5,500 rpm range I am running a spread bore performer air gap intake and will be using a holley 4165 series 650 spread bore with mechanical secondaries my compression is going to be around 9.5-10:1 I have not got my pistons yet I am looking at the Brodex 180 heads and edelbrocks E-street heads any opinions I trust edelbrock but the Brodex have better flow numbers I am looking for something in the 1,000 to 1,200 range also should I get a 70cc chamber and flat top pistons or 64cc and dished pistons?

Personally I would go for the AFR 190s. They come with a 65cc chamber. With a flattop, 5cc valve reliefs, .020 deck clearance, and the FelPro .041 thick head gasket, you end up with 10.5 compression. You could increase the dish in the pistons to reduce the compression ratio. Chevy HiPerformance magazine published the flow numbers of many of the most popular heads and the AFR 190s flowed as well as any of them.

Ya have thought about the AFR heads but I was thinking the 180cc ones not the 190 or 195 I all ready have my intake and think the 180s would mach my intake better. my gut is saying AFR I just dont know if I can get them. an extra $400 is money I could spend some were else. I know if I dont I will just wish I had waited and got them. every dyno pull I see with them they kill the other heads.

Hi there, IF!!!! you can find a pair of Trick flow twisted chamber 180s then grab them. I have been in a 1955 chevy with a 400 fitted with them with similar cam to yours and they are magic...Alternatively the Brownfield/AFR mentioned or the TFS 195s with 64ccs would be a perfect choice and with the right extras 430hp wouls be easily gained if wanted....Skyeking

I migh axualy go with a slightly smaller cam the magnum 270 it is only idle to 5,000 I am going to be driving the car alot and making 100 mile trips in it. so 430HP will not happen I am thinking more like 350HP I just discoverd that comp made the cam about 30 min ago and think it is closer to what i am looking for I will look for the twisted wedge heads as i remember thay had maching 10:1 pistons you could get with them that would be sick for got about them.

I don't know if this will help you but Cam Quest is a free download now, they did charge for it. You can use it to put any sanerio in for your engine and it will give you some ideas. Most probably know of this, but i thought id throw it into the mix for you.. Good luck.. Copy/paste in address bar IF interested..

Hi there, Good to see a realist. At 350hp @ Crankshaft the motor if balanced as an option would just about last for a decade of conservative driving. The torque will still be very real...Skyeking

Looks like I am going to be getting the Edelbrock E-Street heads with the 70cc chambers. When I get farther in to my motor build I will start a build thread thanks for the inpout.

In the price range you stated that would be a good head. If you were to spend double that the CNC AFR heads would be my choice.

Well went with a set of Edelbrock performers instead with 64cc chambers cuz I had a little extra to spend and the idea of being able to use them on an emission compliant car if I ever wanted to is cool did not like the idea of being stuck with 1.25” valves. The CNC work on the intake ports could be cleaned up by hand a little though not the most impressive work I have ever seen also have decided to use a Comp cam XE262 hydraulic flat tappet cam. I am no longer building my 383 my parts are going to be used on a different build I am going to be ordering a 350 GM crate short block early next year so in the meantime going to get other parts bought. I want to use a Holley model 4175 vacuum secondary spread bore 650 what is your guy’s opinions on this carb with the parts I am going to be using. I have an Edelbrock Performer air gap spread bore intake and am thinking the spread bore with vacuum secondary’s will yield the best fuel economy. Not looking to build a real radical motor but something I can drive a lot, take on road trips around 200 miles to see family and still be fast still shooting for around 350 HP should I use a Holley 670 street avenger carb instead maybe a 625 street demon? Or will the spread bore do ok on a mild build like mine?
