Does anyone know of an upholstery panel clip that's not made of nylon (breakable) or wire (loses it's tension) that can be used to clip an interior panel on with. Maybe something that has two parts; a stud and a receiver? Preferably made of metal...???

you might want to look for something... from around a 2000 caravan door panel fastener... those are a double with a receiver in the door and a long pin in the panel.. they grip really tight...
this is a big download... its 700 pages... its the auveco automotive fastener catalog..

it covers more fasteners that you knew existed...
you can also google shop the part numbers to find vendors as auveco sells to its dealers...

Clips like you mentioned are used on most 1962-72 GM door panels.
A plastic grommet goes into an oblong hole in the door shell, and this part goes in a slot on the cardboard door panel:
