hey all its been awhile since i have posted on here but since the last time i have posted i have gone to he!! an back with my truck, i just had a full rebuild done on my transmission and im almost to the 1000 mile mark at which i gotta flush all the old fluid out and change the filter and put new fluid in it.Now right now it has atf+3 in it, its a A-518 with a non lock up converter and i was going to put atf+4 in it after the break in, figured i might as well break it in using +3 since its cheaper, but i just got done talking to some knowledgable transmission guys and they told me +4 would be the last fluid they would choose, i was told since +4 has so many friction modifyers that its going to make my transmission shift poorly and run hotter because i have no lock up requiring the extra friction modifyers and it was suggested to me that i ether run dexronIII or the new dexronIV or type f fluid. Now i know type f works well in the regular 727 i know people who have used it in 727 and that still use it with great results. Type f fluid will bring firmer shifts therefore less slippage i do realize type f requires to be changed more often but i am willing to do that for firmer shifts and a more responsive running truck, i plan on increasing the line pressure a bit and taking the accumulator spring out to firm up the 1st to 2nd gear shift, the only concern i have is not knowing how well type f will work with overdrive unit on my transmission? i have heard type f works the best in overdrive units because it dont slip as much while engadging into overdrive but i have also heard type f dont stand up to heat quite as well as the others, but i do have an aftermarket fluid cooler a pretty good one and i can always use the synthetic type f if im still in doubht, just wanted to get some of your guys's opinion on what to run out of the three i have considered amsoil and royal purple and red line too but what im after is firmer more responsive shifts, thanks
oh an a shift kit is another upgrade that i will be adding as well but that wont be till further along yet, but i will get one most likely from b&m or transgo.
Boy you go back.I know back in the day that was the trick for GM transmissions. All it did was swell the clutch material. But so much has changed with ATF's.I don't know if I would do that today. If it's DEXRON III or DEXRON IV I would use that. The oils today are so much better, If you want just use a good trans additive. The only thing I would do is add the biggest external trans oil cooler you can fit in front of the radiator. If you are still using the radiator for a cooler for the trans MAKE SURE YOU FLUSH THAT OUT REALLY GOOD. If you put a external trans cooler it really does help!I'm not sure what you mean about another upgrade if you install a shift kit. Most shift improver kits have 2 or 3 fifferent ways to set it up. Depending on your use. I have a 2002 GMC 2500 HD. I had only 30000K miles on it but because of time I changed the fluids. It called for DEXRON VI. It's a full synthetic. Almost $100.00 to do that. Thats for the fluid and a filter.HAVE A NICE HOLIDAY....
i always use type-f in my g.m. cars & trucks. in fact b&m says if you cant afford theyre trick shift fluid, use type-f. not too sure on later model vehicles, it could void the warranty. type-f is supposed to have the most anti-foaming agents, but im no scientist. lol. i guess your doing it right,...ask around & see what others say.
Hi Agent 69 !! I hope all is well with you and the major problemo is O>K. All the very best from Skyeking in Australia..
Heay Skye your slurring your words, too much happy juice today???Where you in Viet-Nam?...I did party with a group from Australia... Bad Boys they were they kept getting us Marines in trouble...LOL...
i know type f works well in a regular 727 dont know if i have already mentioned that or not, what im trying to find out is weather it will work well with the overdrive unit on the A-518, the 727 and the A-518 are identical transmissions except the A-518 has an overdrive on the back of it. if type f wont work well with the overdrive ill just run dexronIII or dexronVI or a universal atf. I have two shift kits a transgo and a b&m and im going to install one of therm when i get the time. Just wanted to mention that so people didnt think i was looking for better shifts thru fluid alone.
oh and i forget to mention i do have any external transmission fluid cooler, the old school cooler in the radiator got by passed, its not the biggest cooler im sure but it looks of good quality, its made iof heavier stuff then a radiator is made of and the transmission shop who re-built my transmission are the ones who picked out the cooler.
