I have a stock 73 chevy 400. It runs great but I wanna start building it up slowly. All I have done now is a high rise intake, 800 cfm quadrajet, timing chain, and longtube headers. I wanna know what size and what type of cam I should get for it. Im lookin for somethin that I wont have to rebuild the bottom end or heads to install. I plan on gettin new lifters, pushrods, rockers, and springs also so if anyone knows what I should look for in any of them areas and maybe prices, your input is greatly appreciated. My goal is to build a screamer of a street engine.

Its backed by a T400 with a 500 over stock stall Saturday Night Special TCI converter and stock 3.42 rear end. Other than that its stock.

With stock heads you are limited to how much cam you can use.

A small voodoo cam would probably work better.

Its in an 83 monte carlo ss. This is just a street car. Im not racing it or just takin it to shows. What would be the best cam for the compression ratio of this engine? When i got the engine the block was chevy orange and the heads were blue so im thinkin the heads are from somethin else so judging by the years of the GM blue the heads would be late 70s? Unless someone wanted a 2 tone engine!!! Im not sure i havent looked up the heads ID numbers yet.

good deal monte, just let us know. Some factory heads used short springs on the exhaust which will limit cam choices but we can recommend one that wont cause problems

Well until i get home do blue colored heads mean anything? Is there a lower compression rating since they might be from the late 70s when Blue was used on smallblocks????
