i've got a rebuilt c4 tranny in my 71 mustang and its got a leak behind the torque converter. i replaced the converter seal but had no effect on the leak. do the front pump bolts need sealer or are they blind holes? can i pull the front pump replace the o-rings and bolt it back together without screwing something up? ive never done more than a shift kit on an automatic and if i have to take it to the tranny shop i dont want it to be in pieces. it works great except for the piddle on the floor.

its easier then a shift kit install. there will be a gasket and a o-ring seal, replace both. i use a metal bucket and stand the trans up on its end then remove the bolts. pull out the center or in-put shaft,a soft face hammer, tap on the splinded area to pop loose the pump. it should lift out. there will be a thrust washer or bearing on the inside of the pump, don`t loose it or forget to put it back in. replace gasket and seal, bolts may have seals on them too. lube seals and gasket with petroleum jelly, this holds and lubes the seals. keep it very clean.
take your time,its easy.
good luck

thanks i was hoping it would somewhat simple. the 2 things i hate working on are a/c and automatics and this is about my limit on auto trannys. whenever i get the urge to fix one i think about my high school buddy that did a rebuild on one and had to pull it 4 times to get it right. he hasn't tried to work on one since and that was 20 years ago.
