PCV is ticking

My PCV is ticking away and valve cover acting as a resonance chamber. So I get a new PCV, same thing. So here's the thing. The PCV is opening and closing at idle like a fast heart beat. Should it not be either open or just closed? The vacuum coming off the carb spacer is real strong and feels constant. I am thinking the standard PCV I am using for my application, sb 400 is too heavy and the vaccum is not enought to pick up the steel ball in the pvc to keep it open at idle. If so, how do I find correct one?
Thanks

i bet that if you hook up a vacuum gauge close to the intake.. that you will find your vacuum gauge doing this...\|/ bouncing ...
depending on how much indicates what the problem might be.. almost every chiltons manual has the vacuum trouble shooting charts... that show the different problems..
misfiring spark plugs.. crossfiring spark plug wires.. sticking valves... ( in the guides) excess carbon on the valve face..
rocker arm falling off the stud.. i have found them that have worn through the side of the stud and they fall over..
cam going flat..
the vacuum reading should really be steady...
fuel pump vacuum testers are available at most parts stores under 20 bucks... they go from 15 pounds of pressure to 30 inches of vacuum..

On top of the PCV tapping at idle and faster as rpms increased. I had started to burn oil, blow blue on start up and high rmps. Now it is fighting to idle, kept stumbling. If I revved it up it would backfire.. Sounds like I smoked intake valve.. Guide went bad, wobbled the valve and ate the seal.
My builder has concurred on this diagnosis of the valve being shot, pulling heads will confirm.

3000 miles on motor. I recently adjusted the lash on the valves on the passneger side as it was ticking. A remote possibility I adjusted a valve's lash when it was not at total top dead center. Which could smack it big time with the piston as it comes up and the valve's timing is off from the adjustment and will bend the valve in the head buggering up its seat, valve and guide.
