I just picked up a '97 Explorer Sport with a 4.0. The engine makes a loud noise off the topside. Sounds almost like a diesel. The engine is full of sludge. Does this engine have oiling tubes to oil the cam lobes like an old Pinto engine? If so, can I clean the engine with a cleaner and replace the tubes, also check the cams for wear? Any help would be greatly appreciated. These engines are new to me.

if the timing chains and chain guides....
take a look at the tools required..
http://cache01.voyageurweb.com/otctools.com/newcatalog/products/107266.pdf
i have seen it done without the tools... but that was by a professional mechanic who could do almost anything with basic hand tools...
the timing chain sets are about 380 bucks.. try to get one with the cam plug and other small parts... not all have them and you will need them...
valve cover and oil pan gaskets will be needed also..
oh... and the motor has to come out do do it.. as one head is driven by the front of the engine... the other by the rear of the engine.. the engine also has to be on a stand to do it.. not the floor or a work bench..
with the engine out and the covers all off.. you can probably get rid of a lot of the sludge...
you will also really need a factory service manual that shows all the little details... that aftermarket manuals may not cover.. this is not like a V8 timing chain ... so don't expect to do it in 3 hours.. try several days.. the flat rate time book calls for 16.8 to 17.3 hours for a professional mechanic with all the tools to do it... although.. it does show.. 11.1 hours for someone who has done them a bunch..
best of luck....

agree with waynep7122, theres alot of tools required. the sludge will caused you problems if you do not dissasemble complete and clean. this may be the cause of the noise, overhead cams don`t like to be starved of oil. this motor is good abount the valves sticking and then the cam followers come out and/or break. have seen the brake the tops off the valves too. so look at them close with the valve covers off.
