i have a 97 silverado with a 5.7 l vortec. it has always ran great but it smells like anti freeze in the cab and outside the vehicle. i see no leaks and the temperature gauge is at normal. does this sound like a bad heater core or something else?   and advise would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

it could be the heater core
you need to presurize the coolant system and start looking for the leak

i have a 97 truck with the 5.7 and have had to replace the intake manifold gaskets twice due to the bolts loosening and coolant going into the oil

sometimes it would leak outside the motor, but it would also seap down into the motor and get into the oil

mine would always smell like anitfreeze on the outside after 10 miles or so, not so much smell on the inside

do you keep putting coolant into the overflow tank and never can keep it in there?

i would think that if it was the heater core that you would smell it more when the heat is on AND it would leave small puddles in the floor all the time

No, that's not true. Even when the heat's not on, coolant is still circulating through the core.

Check the floor underneath the core to see if it's wet after the truck's been running. You can rent a pressure tester at Autozone, hook that up and see if the system holds pressure. If it doesn't, you've got a leak somewhere.

when the heat is on the airflow into the vehicle passes across the heater core
when the heat is off the airflow doesn't cross the heater core hence less vapors into the vehicle

i never said coolant didn't pass thru the heater core when the heat was off
