I've been wanting to build a 400 for my 71 chevelle for a while, but I can't figure out a good combo to go with. I am looking to bore and stroke it, and possibly install a blower. I would prefer decent street manners, while still doing very well on the strip. The budget will not really be a problem considering I've been saving for a VERY long time. Also, what kind of CR could I have to still run on pump gas?

Are you going to use a stock block or aftermarket? If you want to stroke or supercharge it I would go aftermarket. About compression ratio, if you supercharge it stay below 9:1, lower the better cuz you can add more boost. E85 octane is over 100 if availible to you then you could probably go 10-10.5:1 safely w/o supercharger. Don't forget that a powerful engine needs a strong trans and rear end
If you S/C, make sure you use a cam specific for it as it will have a wider lobe seperation to minimize valve overlap. Also the best thing you can do is find a really good machine shop that builds engines like this to guide you wth your build up.

I plan on using a Dart block. E85 is at very few fuel stations around my neck of the woods, more of 91 and 93. From what I've been told, a 9 inch rearend should be enough. What type of tranny would be best, manual or automatic. My first car was a manual and I miss it deary...but it was a 4cyl

i actually did a 434 for a street car not too long ago,  we did dart iron eagle block, and had to clearance it for 6.000" H-beam rods, dart pro-one heads with 215cc ports, did some blending in the ports, port matched the intake, mahle 1.000" pistons, hydraulic roller cam with 1.6 rockers, lift was around .570ish, duration in the 236 range, made 550hp. and I think we go the oil pan from champ pans, cuz the pan rails are spread farther apart

Just a thought here, you want to go thru all this trouble building a 400 as well as stroking it so why not build a 430 Buick engine? You can drop it into the Chevelle quite easily and supercharge it to boot. Why torture youself with a chevy when a Buick will work much better?

How about a forged solid roller 434on spray?  You can run 10-10.5 depending on your cam specs.  You could build a stout street engine and run a secondary fuel source for the nirous.  Have your cake and eat it too!

If your gonna supercharge it the heads need to be suited for it also. The bigger the exhaust valve the better.  I've done several where the exhaust valve is almost as big  as the intake valve.

the only closure/disappearance i'm aware of was a week or so ago and it was a few of us discussing the swimsuit issue from 2 months ago...it took extra long to get to me...and i think 69nova355 had some delivery problems with that one too
