I have a 78 pontiac phoenix (x body Nova clone) and i am trying to find information on what rear ends are interchangible into my car and also how to identify the gear ratio and other info about the rear end. im hopoing to find 3.42's or 3.55's with posi, but i can love with a peg leg for a while.  what i can't live with is the 2.73 granny gears i have.

obviously other x-cars from the same generation

i believe that the second generation f-bodies used the same running gear as the x-body, so frontend and rearend parts are interchangable...same parts bolted to a different uni-body

then you can have a Phoen-Am

First Gen F-bodies bolt right in.  You'll probably want one off a chevy for an 8.5" and not the Pontiac specific one, though it'll bolt right on. '76-'79 X-bodies will bolt right on, but it's tough to find an 8.5" rear for those years.  You are wasting your time with a 7.5".  I personally used a rear off a '77 Caddy Seville (K-body), as it bolted right in and had disc brakes, but I did go with the 5x5 lug pattern all the way around as I got the 12" rotors/spindles up front too.

Second Gen F-bodies and X-bodies from '70-'75 will fit but the spring perches have to be cut off and rewelded in the proper place.
