ok, i have a 1989 mustang lx convertible and i have a 1985 mustang 5.0 cobra. i am wanting to make one with the 89. now when it comes to the rear end, are the gears the same or diff. should i salvage the rear end from the 85 and put it on the 89.

i am going to assume that the lx has an open differential and the cobra has posi the housings are interchangable between the cars, internals i'm not sure about
if it's gear ratio you're concerned with...open diff., hold one tire while rotating the other tire one time and count the revolutions of the pinion yoke,...locker diff., rotate one tire while counting the revolutions of the pinion yoke...this will get you reasonably close
if it's interchangability of the gear sets between the two housings, i believe they should both be 8.5" housings, as long as the pinion shaft diameter is the same they should intercahnge
