Running a 700R4 behind a 406 sb. I had noticed a rattling sound when the car is at 2000 rpm in 2nd and 3rd gear. It is breif and goes away when the rmp drops or goes higher than 2000 rpm. The sound seems to be coming from the top of the tranny near the front or under the shifter. Very much a rattling sound. I believe I have isolated the rattle to be that of the Torque converter. It is now rattling when in 1-2-3-D - R, but not in Neutral.

I have found some references of a “mystery rattle” noise complaints that can occur after rebuild, or well within the warranty period . Frequently, the noise can be traced to the TCC piston and damper assembly. I am not sure if this is accurate.

This is the converter I have

I have seen some problems that would cause the noise you mentioned one was the converter bolts being loose and the other was the flex plate bolts being loose.
