Hey Guys,

I have been playing with The ignition timing curve & advance. And I'd like to get your input and suggestions. In the next couple days I am replacing a defective distributor with a new one and will hopefully have the ignition dialed in...

Engine Combo:

86-95 Chevy 350, four bolt, one piece rear, roller cam block .040" over
Patriot 'Vortec' heads; 185cc Int runners, 64cc chambers, 2.02"Int/1.6"Exh valves
Comp XR276HR-10 & 1.6 rollers
.535"Int/.544"Exh
224 / 230 dur @ .050", 110 lobe sep
H345NCP-40 pistons; .004" in the hole @ TDC, .028" thick head gasket.
10.7-1 compression
Professional Products Hurricane+ Int manifold; Single plane high rise
Speed Demon VE 650cfm, 68 main jets, 76 sec. 4.5 power valve, #31 squirter
Summit dist, MSD 6a
91 pump gas @ 5400ft elevation
120hp wet shot nitrous

3200rpm stall lockup converter / 4L60E
4:10-1 rear gears / 30.4" tall wheels

Right now I've got initial ignition @ idle 14 degrees. Mechanical max of 32 degrees @ 3400rpm. 15 crank degrees vacuum advance @ 10"hg starting in @ 6"Hg, vacuum advance on manifold vacuum.

My 350 idles @ 10"Hg
normal accel from a stop 8"-15"Hg
Deccel 20"Hg
Hard accel 3"-5"Hg

I'm thinking of changing the curve a little ***

32-34 degrees @ 2800-2900rpm, idle of 12 degrees
Vac Can: 15 degrees maxed @ 8"Hg starts @ 4-5"Hg

That should give me an idle of 27 degrees, cruise max of 49 degrees all in @ 2900rpm. This is in my daily driver 4,500lb chevy 1/2 ton pickup.

Whatcha guys think? What successful ignition combo have you found?

Cheers ~Mykk

49 deg is a bit much, you have about the max  compression for pump gas that will cause a spark knock (ping). about 36 total timing works good on a sbc. base timing @ 12 deg would be the highest i`d go. it will brake the nose off the starter, mostly on hot restarts. nitrous, the timing needs to be retarded back when using it.  i went to the m.s.d. digitial 6 ignition box. you can run the timing you need until you arm the nos. then it automaticly changes to your pre-set timing. you run good daily and won`t melt it down with the nos.

Actually 10.7:1 is too high for pump gas.
The timing is a little high the 14degrees initial is fine.
The vacuum advance I would bring it down to about 10-12 degrees advance.
