Well, I am very inexperienced with all the vehicle specifics. Yet I have an ambition to figure out how to get started building a V6 engine. I have a $1,000 budget so far.. and all I may have figured out so far is to find a dual air intake manifold and some kind of block to begin. Any suggestions? Would this project run over my budget before the engine is finished?

Also where is a good place to purchase the parts needed?

The 3.5L is the Olds DOHC version of the Caddy Northstar (shortstar for um, short)

More details will get more responses.

Or its a Chrysler...or Ford...or Nissan...or Kia...or Toyota...or Honda...

Lots of companies made 3.5L V6's.

Eh,  I just came from the chevy forum and had GM on the brain.

I doubt he's here to talk Nissan VQ35 or the like and ford's 3.5 is about a year old at this point.

Considering the difficulty/impossibility of rebuilding a Northstar or Aurora V8 (even GM replaced the whole thing rather than rebuild one)...I kinda doubt he's looking to rebuild the V6 version of those motors either...

Maybe he is...as a newbie, he may not realize what he's getting himself into...

But more details are absolutely necessary.

GM replaces all motors rather than rebuilding them  with the possible exception of super rare (LS9?)motors.

Theres no problem with rebuilding any Northstar type motor.  They are extremely popular with the dune buggy crowd with many twin turbo motors making 400-500+ HP

There are very, very few rebuild kits available for the Northstar/Aurora motors...and those that are available are quite expensive.  Camshafts aren't widely available for them either...pretty much stuck with factory offerings to mix and match.  Combine that with the non-replaceable cast-in liners...and you don't leave much room to rebuild if the motor has any significant miles on it.

Custom turbo applications are quite a bit different from a basic back-yard rebuild.

Put it this way, rebuild kits I found for the Northstar V8 (since I could not find anything close to a rebuild kit for the Shortstar in the 2 minutes I searched) are in the $1200-2000 range.  Rebuild kits for Chrysler's 3.5 are in the $500-800 range.  The Chrysler kits include camshafts too...the Northstar stuff didn't.

Now if you've managed to find some cheap Shortstar rebuild kits...by all means, post them.  I'm sure the OP would love to hear about them...if thats what he's rebuilding.

But I highly doubt that is what he's rebuilding...not that it matters since he hasn't been back.
