220 + temps i say would be not good for very long. Maybe short intervals but there is a definite problem. too low? for a 383 I would hesitate to say too low but less than 185 or so would not be optimal for combustion temps.
As for the rear gear unless the 2 rear ends are identical, just get a different gear set for the 73. besides 3.08 are a little too tall for my taste. a street able gear for that 383 would be a 3.42. lots balls down low and just enough top end to not be screaming at highway speeds.
just my 2 cents

2 cent is right on da money with temp. info. I believe that the r&p your 86 is a 7.5 ring gear and the 73 is an 8.5 inch ring gear. go to a pull-a-part yard and get yourself a 76-7-8 seville rear they come with disk brakes. they have 5x5 bolt pattern and some have a 12 bolt ring gear in a 10 bolt housing.this isn't a big deal you can find posi. units in p.u. trucks with 3.42 gears there. also some el camino's in the same years 73-4-5 were equipped with 10 bolts with 12 bolt ring gears. get the perportioning valve off the seville too. field strip the ring& pinions and stick it in the caddy rear walk out most P A P yards get 100.00 bucks for a complete rear.get your-self a 200 r 4 while you are there. you'll be glad you did. 76 Skylark.
