Hello there CC community! New guy here inquiring about my 66 American. It has a 199 and what I would like to do is swap it for 258. I would like to know if its possible and if so what modifications would it need,if any? Does it matter where the 258's from? I hear a 70's 258 is a possibly good candidate? Thanks!

just a strange thought...    i wonder if a fuel injected jeep 4.0 would also fit...   only problem might be with the ignition system on the 90 and up motors as they use a crank sensor mounted near the flywheel to trigger the ecm to discharge the coil...  the distributer on the crank sensor equipped motors is actually a hall effect cam sensor...

again just a thought...  jeeps also come with automatic overdrive 2 wheel drive transmissions...  that might fit to make the swap that much easier...    and many come with factory headers.. but will they fit in your rambler???

The 258 would be a great swap. I had on in a 78 AMC Concord coupe. Even with all the late 70 pollution controls, two barrel carb and automatic trans, the car would still break the tire without using the brakes.

However, with gas prices heading back up again, why not keep the 199 and slap a turbo on it. A blow thru set up would improve with fuel distribution as a plus.

I'm not sure when the 258 came out, but if you put a 1972-or-later six (232/258/or 4.0liter) in your car, you'll need a tranny to match the revised bellhousing bolt pattern.  In 1972 AMC changed to Chrysler torqueflite (904/727) trannies and the bellhousing bolt pattern on the sixes changed to the V8 bolt pattern.
