Can someone tell me how big of a cam I can run with a set of vortec heads with the small springs? Can I run a comp cams extreme 4x4 cam with .488-.498 lift without worrying about breaking springs? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think the stock springs are only good to .450 lift but as with any cam you should always buy maching valve springs.

The stock springs shouldn't be used with an an aftermarket cam. They've got too soft a spring rate and not enough travel.

Swap to a set of Comp 941 springs and matching retainers and locks, they fit the stock spring pocket and have the right rate and travel for that cam. If you're still running a flat tappet, you'll want to have 105 pounds seat pressure, if you've got a roller cam, go with 115-120 on the seat.
