Hello, I have a 49 studebaker on a 93 ford Ranger frame with the Ranger wiring harness for the taillights. A multiple bulb system, and I want to convert to a single taillight bulb. Or simply remove the Ranger system and make a single bulb system. I don't know to do it and I'm hoping someone can help. Thanks very much!

you can if you want a single bulb (dual filament )  get a trailer lamp converter... that takes the 3 or 4 inputs and converts them to brake and turn signals for each side as you will need....

this is if you are running the ranger turn signal switch...  it truly depends on how the turn signal switch and brake light switch are wired...

light green and orange is the rear left turn
orange and light blue is the right turn
light green is the brake lights
brown is the tail lights..
don't forget a good ground for both sides...

here is the wiring diagram for the 93 ranger body..(copy and paste in a new window)

Thanks for the reply, I tried a trailer converter, I managed to get the taillights and turn signals to work but when I add the stoplights, the turn and stop quit working. I am not using the Ranger signal or brake switch as I don't have them. I am simply hooking a hot wire to the various wires as you listed. Any of this make sense? Thanks for the help.

Forgot to mention, I called the manufacture of the trailer converter and they told me that item was not designed to do what I wanted to do, however they told me that people had told them to use a resistor and the converter will work but had no idea what watt or wire to hook it to. I bought a resistor and haven't had time to play with it yet.

what brand of turn signal switch are you using.?????   or brand (make model year of steering column...

what happens.. or how it works...

the brake light switch when your  foot is on the brake... sends power into the turn signal switch...  it goes straight through only to the 2 rear brake light bulbs..

when you step on the brakes and move the turn signal lever... it disconnects that side of the switch from the brake light circuit,  then connects it to the flasher circuit...  it also connects the front and rear turn signal light together... the indicator bulb is run off the front wiring..

this prevents the power from the brake light from going to all the other lamps ...

some turn signal switches are wired for a single bulb tail, turn and stop on one bulb..

so .... which switch/column do you have...

if you can find a tag on the turn signal harness..  that would help i d it...

and... you really might be able to do it with a pair of relays..   it will take me a little while to work out the wiring ... if your column is not already wired that way...

waynep712, the steering column is from a 87 firebird and I don't have a brake light switch hooked up yet, I have 3 of them, just haven't decided which one to use yet.

ok... the point is moot....   the firebird turn signal switch is wired for what you need...

here is the link to the firebird body wiring..

the turn signal switch is down near the bottom...if you hook the out put of the brake light switch to the white wire on the turn signal harness it will work as you want... when you run the wires to the back  as stop and turn combined on one wire per side...

hope this solves it for you....
