Hey, I was hoping someone could help take the time to help guide me along. I recently picked up a 1965 Mustang Coupe, although it has a measly inline six, and an automatic transmission. I was hoping someone could start by suggesting a very, very cheap V8 that still packs a decent punch, as well as has the potential to be really pushed later on, when I have the money. As of yet, I'm limited to $1500, which I recognize is a shamefully limited budget to attempt a restoration with, but I'm only a student and it's all I can set aside. Once again, any help would be much appreciated.

most 60 ford people are buying 87 to 91 ford 5.0 HO motors out of mustangs... and crown vics... the HO motors come with factory forged pistons...and shortie headers..  two positive points......  there is a lot of stuff to change over....  and i don't think 1500 is going to do it....

how does the straight six run... good still... saves a lot of gas...

to do the swap... you will need..a bunch of stuff... and a place to do it...

intake manifold, carb, dizzy, motor mounts, throttle linkage, the trans is different, the radiator,  hoses, belts, ... exhaust...

the six has lasted this long...     it is not a drag car...  it is transportation..

there are a lot of articles on it over at

keep the 6 cyl you can accualy get more from it than the 8 with less money  increase the compression ratio up use rollers thru the engine and install a high performance cam   trust me I have seen this done for racing and my motors never loose

Alright... Are you sure, because I found out that someone is selling the engine and transmission out of a 1995 Mustang GT for $1500, so if that's a viable alternative, I probably should... And as to the things I'll need, Intake manifold is there, it's fuel injected, if by dizzy you mean distributer I'll have to find the money for that... As for motor mounts, are they possible to make? If not, any expected prices? The original throttle linkage is for a V8, don't know if that will help me at all (the car was once a V8 I should mention, somewhere down the line someone pulled an I6 out of a Fairline and dropped it in...). The transmission will be for the new motor, albeit the size may not line up, radiator is included, hoses I'll buy, belts are fine and my best friend's dad runs an exhaust shop, so I might be able to frankentstein some spare parts together. Thank you both for the replies, by the way.
