REPLACING TIMING CHAIN

Hi, maybe someone can answer my question.

On my 1970 Nova (350SB) I'm replacing the timing chain. I removed the chain and camshift gear but the crankshaft gear is just stuck on. I haven't used a specific tool like a gear puller or anything, I blow torched the gear to try and expand it but it just wasn't loosening at all.
The engine is stil in the car and i'd rather not remove it, I was thinking that the gear is permanently attached to the crankshaft sprocket and that I'd have to replace the sproket.

If anyone knows exactly how to get the gear off in my position then please reply, thanks.

hope you did not melt the exposed front main bearing...    probably not...

try a pry bar.... one side.. then the other... its just on a little tight...    which is a good thing...

remember...  the balancer has held it tight to the front of the crank shaft for decades...

it might take a little to bust it loose...

kent moore did make a tool to help remove them... looked kinda like a scoop type pitman arm puller..     might have even been the same tool...

since you are replacing it...     got a sharp cold chisel .???   more than likely it will split if you hit it with the tip and a medium hammer.. 2 pound.. 3 pound...  hold the chisel at 45 degrees or so...

it also helps to heat the crank gear to get it back on.... and you can put it all the way on.. and then after it is seated... install the cam sprocket and chain...

I am at the same spot on my 283. You can try to use two prybars, one on each side. Alternate the pressure, and try to seesaw it off. When placing the new one on, be gentle with it. Try to put an open socket over the crank, and lightly tap it with a hammer, or even a mallet. They are difficult and will test your patience, take your time, and some deep breaths or cussing or both. You'll overcome it eventually. Good luck.

Thank you all for the advice, I was able to finally pull the gear off today! I've been struggling with it for about a week now, it was mostly because I have no crowbar so I ended up being very patient with a monkey wrench and WD-40. Again thank you all for the replies.

Im going to be posting another thread, I'm trying to find out if I can replace the camshaft with my engine still in.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!

Jesus! DO NOT USE PRY BARS! That'll only serve to screw up the snout of the crank.

Go to your local Autozone, and rent a crank gear puller tool. It's free to rent in the end, and will remove the gear properly and quickly. Put a little oil on the crank snout so as you pull the gear off it'll easier and the gear won't stick coming off.

Ok I'll check that out, as my gear is still on, I'm waiting on my machine shop to send my heads back, before goin futher with the engine.
