i have a 79 skylark with a v 6 presently in it that is in the final stages of death with the rising prices of gasoline i have given up the v 8 swap plan for possibly a more cost effective one how would a 4 cyl. chevy s 10 engine with twin tubos work in this car? my v8 wish list for the car is a LT1 drivtrain from a 96 roadmaster whitch i know is a fairly efficient engine with power right out of the box anyone got any advice??

A Buick 350 with a docile cam and a well tuned q-jet with a TH200r4 trans will drop in with almost no modifications required (I can't think of even one, but there is bound to be something minor). They used the same accessory brackets, same motor mounts, the trans is the same length as the factory TH200, sensors are in the same place and the wiring harness is more than long enough to reach with the extra two cylinders. You will end up with more power than the v-6 and 25+mpg. You'll need the aftermarket gizmo to get the torque converter lock up on the 200r4, and thats about it.
I've swapped in a 200r4 behind my old 231 and did not even have to shorten the drive shaft, modified absolutely nothing. Now I have a Buick 455 under the hood (with a 5-speed manual, got ~23mpg until I pulled it and currently building an EFI 455 engine) and the wiring harness still reaches all the sensors and connections. The 455 swap required new frame pads for the motor mounts, but the Buick 350 uses the same ones as the V-6.

The 4-cyl is the wrong way to go here. That car is heavy enough to need something that puts out decent torque if you want economy.
A mild small block with 9:1 compression and the right head/cam/intake combo, combined with an auto overdrive trans a economny gear out back will do everything you want. I'd say a mild 327 with a hydraulic roller cam would be about perfect.

You do have an even-fire engine, your best bet is if you want to go the turbo route is to get a standalone EFI computer with a fuel injection set up. I think the Turbo Regal/GN heads and intake will bolt to your block, or the intake may even bolt to your heads (not sure on that one at all). A turbo on a carbed version of that engine would be a pain simply because finding a boosted referenced carb for such a small engine would be tough if not simply expensive (they are much more common for larger V-8's).
