5-speed manual into '78 Impala?

Probably a dumb question- but is it possible to swap a 5-speed manual into a '78 Impala? What would I need to do so? I'm from the Mopar crowd (ducks to avoid objects) and this Impala just kinda landed into my lap. I was fixing it to resell it... but no one wants it, and I rather like it, besides that it's an automatic and it has no overdrive gear and SUCKS down the fuel. I had a '74 Celica I was going to use as a daily that got 40 MPG... but totalled that in a rather nasty accident (passed out behind the wheel from a peanut allergy), lost all my money, and if i can pull 25 MPG or better out of this Impala, I might as well keep it. 305 2bbl, granny mobile two door with minor rust. But I need a manual trans or at least an overdrive on the cheap. I just want a manual because I love to row my own gears.

Anyone know anyone who's done this, or where I can find information? I really, really appreciate it.

A 5-speed conversion for this car can be done, but requires a lot of fabrication and is a nightmare if you're looking for cheap.

Putting an overdrive trans in the car is no problem though. A 200-4R overdrive trans will drop right in to replace the TH350 trans the car has now. The 200 is almost exactly the same length as the TH350, so you don't have to change the driveshaft. The only thing you might have to do is move the transmission crossmember back just a bit.

Would a 700R4 work, or is that too long?

As for the 5-speed, how much fab are we talking about? Is there a pedal setup that would fit or no?
