I HAVE A 73 NOVA WITH A 350,STOCK HEADS AND SMALL MODS TO THE ENGINE.I GOT A TH350 TRANNY AND A REAR END FROM A 70'S TRANSAM WITH 3.42 GEARS AND POSI. A FRIEND OF MINE IS SELLING ME A 700R4 BRAND NEW FOR A GOOD PRICE,WOULD THAT TRANNY FIT RIGHT IN AND IS IT A GOOD COMBINATION WITH EVERYTHING ELSE.I WAS ALSO THINKING OF CHANGING THE GEARS FORM 3.42 TO 3.73 ON THE REAR END,WOULD THAT BE A GOOD SWAP WITH THE STOCK TRANNY?

The 700R4 is a longer trans mission therefore you will have to alter or replace the trans crossmember to accomadate the trans. Also you will have to find a good shop that can cut and balance your driveshaft to a shorter length. Otherwise it is a fairly simple swap. If you swap to the 700R4 I would stick with the 3.42 gears. Because these transmissions have anywhere from a 2.80-3.10 first gear ratio you don't want a rear gear too high that will make first gear near worthless.
good luck

If I recall the 700r4 mount location is the same as the th400, there should be a set of holes farther back on the subframe. The driveshaft will certainly have to be shortened. Your also going to need the TV cable and brackets for the cable and carb, this is critical bacause the trans relies on throttle position to referance line pressure to know when to shift. Also the lockup converter will be another issue all together so it would be best not to fool with it until you've got some miles on it and all the bugs worked out.
All the power in the world don't mean a thing if you can't get it to the ground!

I have a '73 Chevy Pick-up that I did the same swap in, however I didn't have to cut my Drive Shaft because a Truck's TH-350 is the same leangth as a 700r4. However, It was a piece of cake hooking it up to the carb, all I used for the TV-Cable Bracket was the stock Kickdown Cable Bracket and the cable hooked right up to the Carb where the kickdown cable goes. My truck has 4.10's in the rear end but I have a 30in tall tire that compensates for my gear ratio in First gear. I hope this helps you.
