C4 to an AOD...

It's my understanding that an AOD (not an AODE) from a truck will work on my setup, 72 F100 with a 351W and current C4. I believe the AOD is the same length and can use the same mount, crossmember, and I wouldn't need a new yoke, or need to cut my driveshaft. Or so I've been told. Anyone done it? I'm not in a high horsepower or heavy towing rig here, just wanting overdrive. Stock AOD would be fine I think. I'd like to know about the lil intricacies of the swap before I dive in, any adjustments I might want to make sure I get right, shift linkage concerns (I know a 3 speed shifter will work, just wondering about kickdown). Thoughts?

the aod transmission requires a throttle valve cable... and the hook up at the exact length from the center of the throttle shaft...    look for throttle cable brackets from a v6 or v8 CFI ford car or truck...83 to 87 i think was the last year for CFI... including lincolns..  without the cable ajusted perfectly... it will smoke the trans in 2 blocks..

i think the aod is a little longer... but you should be able to use the same cross member if it is movable..

the flex plate is also different... buy you will have to check on that..

the aod is a nice transmission.. but the c4 is normally a lot more durable in life span..

I've discovered a better trick than swapping to the AOD actually. I keep the 295/50R15's for the track and cruise-ins, and for the street I just use 225/70R16's out back. Makes a world of difference in mileage at cruising speeds. Looks good with either set of wheels! got 225/70R15's in the front. That and the taller tires put my speedo back where it should be. Cheaper and easier! too much work and money spent if I did the trans swap.
