Oh yeah,I forgot to tell you guys about the 69 Vega I bought new. It had a 283 aluminum 4 with a factory high rise manifold and a 6 speed trans. It even had headers in the back to put on if I wanted to race it. I sold it to a guy in China before I took pictures of it. I would post them otherwise. Really,I ain`t kiddin` you!

a fella I work with asked me what I had in my car, I responded it's a 408. He said........I didn't know they still made stroker cams to make a 350 into a 400. He also told a bud of mine that if he was tired of the 307 in his cutlass he should just take some heads and a cam out of a 455 and that will make it a bigger motor. I love talking to that guy.

Thanks. You need a sense of humor to put up with some of the stories you hear. I`ve been into cars since I was 12 and am now getting near the half century mark. Went to a vocational tech school for auto mechanics and worked at a Ford dealer for a few years. I`ve also screwed together a few cars over the years and did some bracket racing. My local bar here is called Racers and I`ve listened to a few ( Experts ) share their knowledge with me. Its amazing what some people think they know!
Oh yeah, by the way. Did you know that VW ran out of regular production engines for a day in January of 64. The truck had broke down and could`nt make its delivery,so they used engines from Porsche until the shipment arrived. They even used one of the cars in a movie. Herbie the Luv Bug was born. Proof positve that it really happened! Now, would I lie about something like this. Oooohhh Noooo!
HAPPY NEW YEAR Everybody

These "know-it-alls" have been around for centuries. Aesop (remember those Fables & Sat. morning cartoons?) once wrote : "when you're talking to a fool, be sure he isn't doing the same"---I love that!

Twenty years ago I had a pair of VW air-cooled heads for a beetle that needed to be rebuilt. A friend recommended a shop in Santa Ana that specialized in only cylinder heads, including VW's.They even had racing VW photos posted in the front office. Well, I brought in a pair of aluminum heads and asked what kind of valve guides they used (expecting them to say silicon-bronze). The owner said we use "good guides". Hearing that, I felt like bolting out then and there, but due to my friend's recommendation, I stayed. When I went back to get the finished pair, they were painted silver (the kind that doesn't dry) on the outside, with the combustion chambers painted flat gray. The valve guides were some kind of cast iron things that were so thick I figured the restriction they made would kill any power I might have had. On top of that, when I held the heads up into the sunlight, and looked into the ports, there was a ring of light around all the valves! Also, the new valve seats they installed were bigger than the stock o.d.'s too. Now the seats had almost no shoulders to sit on and could cave in. All I could do was save the new valves and through the rest into the garbage can. It wasn't funny for at least the first ten years.

And there was the 79 Charger I had for a while. It had a 340 Magnum Hemi and 5 Speed automatic on the column. They put the special 9 inch rear in it from the factory because it made so much power the stock rears kept breaking. I wish I would have taken pictures of that car too!
I know you all believe me! Don`t Ya?

I have a brother-in-law that always have to 'one-up' you.. in 1969 he was just a friend (not married to my sister yet!) and he didn't like the attention my 1965 GTO was getting when we cruised town. He bought a 1969 Super Bee with a 383 4-speed, boy you should have heard of all the stuff that was on his car that was the ONLY one like it.. he had tint on the windows that wasn't on any others, it had a special paint job.. he was telling a bunch of us about all these things when another friend interrupted and said "... yeah, we know Jim they destroyed all the tooling and fixtures once your one-of-a-kind car rolled off the line!" He (Jim) couldn't help but smile with an embarrassed look on his face, he finally realized how dumb it sounded but it didn't stop him.. just a few weeks ago we were talking about our cars we had in High School and I heard all those stories again... at least he is consistent!

Just like bracket racing, cosistency is everything! You gota love it.
It reminds me of the 55 GTO my Dad had. The fastest car ever built at the time. Yeah, Oldsmobile knew how to do back then!?! It almost started Pro/Stock before its time.
I could go on,but you probably could`nt take the B.S story.
This has been fun. Thanks Guys!

I'll have to admit, I was once one of those kids who thought i knew alot, but now i know better because i learned alot more since then, and i just laugh in the back of my head when a gearhead wannabe talkes about the high rise intake and 800 cfm carb he has on his otherwise stock 350. He claim about a 100 horsepower increase, but anyone in the right mind would say thats not possible, espesially when it still has the stock cam and heads that flow as good as blowing through a straw.
