Now for the explanation . . . .

Ethelkilledfred figured out that the morbund CC Summer Nationals section is a great place to park threads that would ordinarily disappear in a couple of days elsewhere.  Sort of like a virtual "sticky."

Great thinking, EKF!

BTW, EKF-- bitchin pics on the Brotherhood Christmas party. It's unbelievable that a place as huge as L.A. has no convenient place to race but the streets . .  the "City fathers" can subsidize golf, tennis, skate parks, baseball, all sorts of weird "cultural" events . . . but NOTHING FOR RACERS!

What we really need is a new paradigm for "outlaw street racing" facilities (one that preserves the essense of street racing but with some safety improvements) --

  • Locations near airports or industrial areas that are open 24/7, but with spectator protection and some fire/EMS support nearby (e.g. an ordinary fire station).
  • Maybe a self-service "toll gate" for entry to the lanes (and to keep only one pair on the strip at a time) . . .
  • just a street-style stop light (no Christmas trees) . . .
  • burnout box (of course)
  • multiple strips for quicker action . . .
  • automated track sweepers . . .
  • minimal tech inspections for the faster cars (could be monthly or even annual -- racers are big enough to assume the risk and protect themselves) . . .
  • cable barriers between the lanes . . .
  • soft walls . . . .
  • laid-back, community policing (just enough law enforcement "presence" to keep the drunks, dopers, fighters, gangsters, taggers, car theves, gunmen and sydeshow freaks out of action).

you know  you might be on to something here and if pitched well a town could refine the idea and make a fortune off it.

The problems are:

  1. Racers aren't good at organizing or "working the system" (I say this after going through several battles to save tracks from residential encroachment. Organizing racers is like "herding cats")

  2. We are still in the minority, while other recreational pursuits are viewed as more "mainstream" (yet I wonder how many people really use municipal golf courses, skate parks or midnight basketball leagues)

  3. The "stiffs" still believe the "SPEED KILLS" overgeneralizaton and are skeptical about anything that smacks of speed

  4. Any racing facility (even the one I outlined) costs a lot of money.

  5. Legal liability concerns keep many cities from doing anything different (even allowing a Long Beach GP-style street race or a closed highway time trial like the Silver State Classic)

  6. The general trend seems to be toward less individual liberty and more "nanny state" thinking--and expanding grassroots racing opportunities certainly runs counter to the "we know what's best for you" philosophy infecting government at all levels.

  7. None of the major sanctioning bodies are interested in thinking out-of-the-box to expand grassroots racing opportunities and get racers off the streets

It's been over 50 years since Wally Parks and the NHRA Safety Safari toured America showing small-town cops and car clubs how to set up drag strips. Now we have huge numbers of performance enthusiasts with no convenient or safe place to race and a dwindling number of tracks that are bent on catering to a small community of traditional bracket racers.

I'm frustrated about all of this.  But in my town, the city counsel threw me off of the planning commission for even less innovative thinking (certainly not relating to something as controversial as building a new type of public racing park). Had I proposed this, they would have moved to have me committed to an asylum . . . .)

I love the toll booth idea!!!!! Even 1/8th mile track would work for this and it would limit top speeds making it safer than 1/4 mile track. Very nice.

Why build a 383 shiby when Ma Mopar built the 383 the right way from the factory?

I don't think it will really work as a "sticky" . . . EthelKilledFred's post has already dropped off the page.

Thanks, here is how you keep the City liability to zero-wavier that Big Willie came up with and it held up in court and is the standard at almost all racing events including NASCAR.

Clikck Here>Brotherhood Raceway gets sued and wins making history from SD Permit for Race Legal
