Remember, a car that was parked was probably parked because something was already wrong with it
Mechanical problems to look for:
--Brakes (all hydraulics need to be rebuilt, inspect and replace brake hoses, if necessary. Make sure that brake shoes haven't delaminated (commonly caused by sticking to the drums because of inactivity)
--leaking seals (transmission, pinion, crank)
--leaking gaskets
--Rodent-eaten electrical wires (it happens often with "field cars")
--Bad valve stem seals (common source of engine smoking)
--rust on cylinder walls (cylinders stored with a valve open can rust if oil drains off)
--Valve float from weak springs
--fuel leaks (carb should be rebuilt, all rubber lines replaced, fuel tank checked for leaks because of rust from water in the fuel)
--Varnish in the fuel system (pull the tank, remove the sender, clean out the varnish (what's left when the lighter hydrocarbons evaporate with time), blow out the hard fuel lines, replace the fuel filter)
--coolant leaks (replace all hoses, check radiator for leaks (you can cut and connect a bicycle innertube with hose clamps to the hose connections, put on the cap, lightly pressurize the radiator to 10 p.s.i. or so, and then submerge it in a wash tub or other container. If it bubbles, then you've got a leak))
--Wheel bearings--repack during the brake job
There are probably more, but these are the ones that come to mind.
