I have a problem someone may be able to help me with. It's a 302 CFI in an 85 Lincon Town Car. The car when started cold has about 35psi when idiling the car then drops steadly to around 5 psi or lower. The speed of the pressure drop increases if the engine is revved. I have cleaned the pickup tube screen and several other tricks. What could be the Problem?

Try flushing the oil system. Many auto part stores carry oil system cleaners. Basically they're solvent like cleaners that run through the oiling system cleaning it. Over time there could be sludge build up somewhere clogging an oil passage. I used this stuff and picked up 10 psi. I do it now at every oil change. If you still have low oil pressure after flushing the system, it could be alot of things. Bad oil pump, spun bearing, or any number of things. Try the flush first and see if it helps at all. Be sure to read the directions on the can or bottle. The stuff I used was put into the engine at operating temperature(the vehicle is not driven during this time) run for 5 minutes then you change the oil and filter. This is why I do it at oil changes, because you have to drain the oil when you're done. Hope this helps?--Phil

what kind of mileage you got on that motor?  It sounds like worn main bearings.  Or maybe wasted oilpump.  Have you tried some thicker oil, or maybe some Lucas additive?  I don't know if these will work or not but they're way cheaper than a rebuild.  Good luck with that

Hello, I'm new to this forum.  Anyhow, what you are experiencing is the typical signs of your Ford motor worn out.  The low oil pressure problem is most likely caused by worn bottom end bearings.  How many miles does your 302 have on it?  I just replaced my 390 short block with a much needed new one.  Fortunately, the heads were already recently rebuilt before I bought my tow rig.  But anyways, my oil pressure problem with it was similar to yours.  Cold idle was at 40 psi and hot idle (180) was at next to 0 psi, according to my War-mart oil pressure guage I had installed.  I think you should just freshen up the bottom end with some bearings, rings, and an oil pump and you'll see you oil pressure come back.  Let me know.

Hey, how's the oil pressure problem coming along? What did you come up with or what have you done?
