whats the deal with these oil companies that are selling oil they claim to be good for 5,000, or even 15,000 miles without changing? i wouldnt do that to my daily driver, ('91 Buick Regal, you know you want one,,) certanly not any engine that i really care about,,, Dont get me wrong, i just put 5 qts of the mobil '5000' stuff in my Buick, but you can be sure that ill be changing the fram filter and dropping the oil on the 3.1L Multi-Port V6 (feel the horsepower,,) in the next 3 monthes or 3,000 miles, cant hurt anything,,,
Am I alone?

The big deal about the mileage thing is that the oil is supposed to hold up longer. A lot of convential oil breaks down because of heat, hence the 3k change. That being said, the filter you use may not be up to it. My biggest reason for changing every 3k? If there's shavings in the oil I want to know at 3k, not 7k. OK... bbut that being said, how often do you actually cut open the filter to see if there are shavings in there let alone send your oil off for analysis. I would bet that it is not very often if ever. I am an avid builder but I never do it. I keep the oil and filter changed regularly (3000 miles) and look in the bottom of my drain pan for anything unusual. Let's get real.

the idea is sin oil can take the heat old school oil couldn't and with efi there shouldn't be gas washing the cyl walls and thining the oil, two of the bigest reasons for the 3 month/3000 mile change intervals...
and the other idea is people are cheap and lazy if I can get 5 times the life out of an oil change ,that means 5 times less time a jiffy lube and 5 times the money spent...and to people that are not into cars that sounds really good........
and with most new cars are cars no one cares about this stuff will fly...
should make looking for a good used car a FUN time..
me: I'll stay with the 3/3000 change intervals but there are many people that will see this stuff and think that the cheap oil can go 15000 miles and thats scary..... and there are more of them than u'd think...
If it won't move,FORCE it,If it breaks, IT needed replacing anyways!!!!!!!!!!

Hell NO!!! you are not alone. Modern engine oil may be better than it was even a few years ago, but modern engines are definitely harder on the lubricants poured into them. I have seen some cars go 10k without a change, without any obvious damage (other than the oil is so thick you have to keep poking an extension into the drain hole to keep it flowing; think half frozen molasses) and i have seen engines become what we called at the (toyota) dealership i worked at at the time-"sludge bombs" with just one missed oil change!!!(i beleive the manufacturer has recalled some of these engines for this) But, still, oil is too damn cheap to take the chance. I change my oil in my 2003 ford e-350 every 2500 miles because of my poor driving habits (see also: Mario Andretti on CRACK) I would rather spend 50.00 every other month (i run the synthetic crap, too) than spend 4500.00 or 5000.00 on an engine. simple economics, i think. yup I run mobil 1 and change 3000-4000 miles but thats me...
the 15000 mile oil is and I mean is fly'n off the shelves.. and it wouldn't take to long for people to get into that interval habit and then reach for the cheap oil and go the same distance...
and you know its gonna happen...... mechanic's are like" go ahead have fun ,, more work for me,, " we'll see but i'm thinkin that there is gonna be alot of engine work in the near future to be done..
I'll gladly take work from the stupid keeps most places open
if people did mantain there car the way they should half the shop around would go under from lack of work....

Also, it's not the oil per se, that breaks down, but the additive packages in the oil. Also, with carbon and dirt, the filters can get cloggage and bypass the filter entirely, causing #### oil to go thru the engine. I'll stick with 3mo/3,000 mi change interval.
