I need some help with a cam recomendation.  I'm looking for a cam to put into my 71 nova.  The engine is a 350.  I am aiming for a good daily driver engine that has a moderate "kick" to it.  I'm looking for a cam with a LCA of 114 with a duration of no more than 220-224 @ .50 and a valve lift of around .460-.490, if any of ya got a good one plz post it.  I have been looking at lunati, comp cams, and a few others and havn't found anything that matches up the lca, duration @ .50 and valve lift.  Also, I have been looking at comp cams and they make a musclecar era cam, anyone have any experience with that?  The cam I was looking at was edelbrocks performer cam, but I decided I want something slightly more aggresive.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Not really enough info (rear gear, trans, etc.), but that said, I like the Comp Xtreme Energy 262 for a mild 350.  The closest one to your specs is actually the one for computer-controlled vehicles, part # 12-262-4.  I had the regular flat-tappet XE 262 in a 350, and was very pleased for a daily driver in my old '81 Malibu Wagon.

Who told you to look for a cam like that, because whoever they are, it's a great reccommendation.

But for a actual cam number, Comp Cams PN 12-404-4 looks awesome. If your looking for something even more aggresive, your probably gonna have to be looking at a custom grind from Comp starting at about $200.

Looks like your looking for a factory performance cam-

Small Block Chevy Factory Cams

Camshafts have the most influence on your engines power output since they control how your engine will run.

Camshafts are identified by (usually) the last 4 digits of the part number and a casting symbol. These markings will usually be in the center of the camshaft, obviously inbetween the valve lobes.

Key to table:
DUR = Duration, C/R = Compression ratio of engine used in (stock), LSA = Lobe Separation Angle.

This is a good cam in a 350 and a 305.

Crane sells it as a Muscle Car Cam under PN#967601

My auto teacher reccomended that to me.  He said 114 is a good choice cause its for a street car and the power band is more spread out or something to that matter and anything over 224@ .50 would require me to really rev the car (it's a 4spd and is already a freeway flier because of the gear ratio(not sure on gear ratio but low 3's im guessing), and the engine in it now requires me to hit the gas for around a full second to get the engine rpm up enough to get it going for street use.)

One question though on the cam you reccomended.  Comp cams website says its for an engine running 10-12lb of boost i blieve, is that still useable by me?  Also if the cam is made for computer control vehicles, would it still be compatable with mine?

Summit has cams like those. They are for mild performance low compression street engines such as yours.
They 114 LSA is Lobe Seperation angle and wider is smoother with a wider powerband, tighter is a narrower powerband and more for all out racing. a 110 is considered neutral.
The cam recommended is good, look to summit "brand" cams and you will find what you need.

Well I say that's a good reccommendation from your auto teacher, those cams will work fine with your engine. If you had lower gears coupled with that manual you could work with a narrower LCA to gain some more peak torque, but if your wanting a true street ride, stay with 114.

oh yeah..the old speed pro (now fed-mogul) cs-179r..man that profile is dated....just look at the lobe intensity...306-222=a weak lobe.nice idle tho

better deal (value) is the Crane Energizer 'black box specials'...

but a better lobe is def the Comp Stuff..'specially the Extreme Energy series...but more $$......

Yeah I'm going to go for the Comp Cams PN 12-404-4.  Gonna write it down and when I need to get a cam / lifters that's the one I'm going for.  Thank you guys for your help and I'm sure I'll be back asking many more questions.
