Hi all-- Can anyone offer any experience on what to adjust timing to on a Chevy 350 stock motor (circa 1970's block 2 bolt) after I install my new 64cc heads/Cam kit I bought from Edelbrock? I have a Mallory unilite ignition which I believe carries 24 total degrees crankshaft advance. Here are my cam specs
Operating Range 1500-6500 RPM Duration Advertised 308° Intake/318° Exhaust Duration @ .050'' 234° Intake/244° Exhaust Lift @ Valve .488'' Intake/.510'' Exhaust Lift @ Cam .325'' Intake/.340'' Exhaust Lobe Separation Angle 112° Intake Centerline 107° Intake Timing @ .050" Open 10° BTDC Close 44° ABDC Exhaust Timing @ .050" Open 59° BBDC Close 5° ATDC

In responce to 350 question.I always set time to top dead center with rotary button on #1 plug wire and advance time 4 to 6 degrees to get motor started. Once motor starts,I set time where motor will idle smoothly. Once motor warms up to run temperature(180 degrees),I set time to fastest smooth possible idle an shut motor off, wait 10 seconds. I then restart motor. If motor drags,I shut motor off and back timing just a tad,and restart motor repeating process till motor starts easily with out dragging. This always works great for me with out using timing light. If you get ping or rattle going up hill. you may need to retard time just a small bit ,maybe 2 to 4 degrees or try 93 octane fuel. This is based on my personal experience only. Hope this helps.

I have 305 with flat top pistons,394/414 lift cam,58cc stock heads shaved .010 off bottom. Motor has rattle when i rev hard. I can back time off with vacuum advance unhooked and it quits rattling. Motor has 75,000 miles on rebuild and carries 40psi. on hwy and 15psi. idling. and still runs good. 3,500 mile oil changes at reg.intervals reveal no dirt, metallic grit or metal particles. motor is still clean inside. If anyone has experienced this,Could you share with me and what your problem might be,or have been? thanks carfulmechanic out.

To RobK. I hope i was helpful. I had to learn to work on car mostly my self with the help of one elder mechanic for advice. I am mostly familiar with mid and pre 80s on back cars. I wish you well with your project. Post back and let me know if this helps. GibTG has good knowledge on motors an can also give good advice and pointers,AS he has helped me just from reading his posted opinions.

I would set the initial timing at 12-14 degrees advanced this should get you close to your peak timing with out binding or drag.
