I am writing in response to reader's letter of the month (Jan '04) by "J. Bond."  I'd like to start out by saying that it is cocky, arogent, *** like this who give our sport bad wraps.  I'd also like to state that I can't stand the "ricer movement" but, i respect anyone who can back what they have-ricer or otherwise.  As far as j. bond goes, I didn't know that "import racing" was even a term. If running 14's with a cold air intake, a DTM pipe, and a 50 horse shot of NITROUS plus getting your ass kicked by the '70 LS6 Chevelle in the next lane is your idea of racing hey, whatever rubs your budda pal.  I takes talent to buld an import?  I didn't know thumbing through Jegs and JC Whitney to look for bolt-on parts required talent.  The only research this idiot did was to look up what a 7.4 is in cubic inches because he wishes he had one.  He makes that obveous by say they can "tune" 2 liters to make the same horses.  News flash pal, 425hp from 2 liters? What are you on?  He says we envy them because the average muclecar tuner is quote," old, fat, balding, unemployed, and lives in a trailer home." This is where it gets personal one my part.  What if I told you that the average ricer is a 15 yr old kid w/ his temps, mommy and daddy bought your 4-door Civic as economical transportation to and from school, you have bad acne, you wear pants that don't fitand the only illusion of good looking girls you have is the 15 yr old standing by the airbrushed, airbagged s__tbox in an import tuner mag.  I work a 3rd shift factory job at $7.75p/h, I'm 22, I have a 4 year old son, a beautiful girlfriend, and I'm in debt over my head, I know what a budget is, trust me.  I still managed to restore and pull 600 horses from my 81 Camaro.  Personally I think he's  compensating for something, lack of a real car or lack of ball you decide. Rice for life---get a life, your Honda sucks!

That guy (Hatemonger) is just another one of these punks. I grew up old fashoned I guess. My first car was a Beautiful 78' monty, since I have had a couple ricers and I kinda understand why people like them. They sit so f@#*ing low to the ground that it seems like your going faster than you are. I know own an 87' camaro that I dropped a 396 into. One of my friends are into those things though and i've tried to reason with him but he just wont listen. His arguement is that he can get as much or more power out of a 280Z as my 396, and still kepp gas mileage. I told him yeah it's possible but by doing everything he'd have to, I could still have enough money in comparison to afford avgas every tank full for a year or so. Then he asked me what avgas was.

This is a copy a a letter I sent to the magazine a few days ago:

First of all I do not intend to bash those who partake of the Rice Bowl of Hot Rodding, for I do believe that they have their place in the long line of Muscle Car/Hot Rod roots of history.  I just could not help but notice some major mis-representations made by the here-to-fore  James Bond (J. Bond, Jan. letter of the month).  The statement "You gearheads tune 7.4L 454s while we tune 2.0L four cylinders and get the same HP results" litterally jumped off the page at me!   Any "gearhead worth his/her salt should be getting upwards 450+ HP out of that old Chevy BB with out breaking the bank and then be able to go out and feel the torque from stoplight to stoplight with out revving the engine to the stratosphere.  I am sure that to acheive that kind of HP from a 2L four would take major modifications to the engine internals as well as an (un)healthy dose of NOS or extremely high PSI levels out of their blower or turbo.  Then having to  rev the engine to 8000 RPM just to feel the power will cause said engine builder to become very familiar with  the inside of his engine.    One other thing on that note is how many people (percentage wise) are gonna sink enough money into their engines to achieve this kind of performance, from what I've seen not too many.  "We actually research and develope parts to push the industry"?  As if we do not??  "The average muscle car tuner is old and fat"   Since the muscle car era begin in earnest 40 some years ago it would make sense that there would be a number of older balding type persons involved with hot rodding.   It would seem that todays young person, being raised in a family where  mom drives a mini van and dad drives an Acura TL, one can see what type of vehicle the kids of today would have a natural inclination to migrate to.  NASCAR?  Anybody care to inform  J. B. that Toyota is throwing their hat into the ring?   One last thing, I am currently removing the rust from a recently aquired '71 Cutlass sx (455), identicle to the first car I purchased in 1978 and sadly sold 3 years later.  I will then upgrade to 4 wheel disc brakes, tublar control arms, massive sway bars, huge tires all the way around and a 455 engine that will be pumping out a normally aspirated 600 lb. ft. of torque!
oh yeah, my wife is 33 years old a very good looking.................

you cant teach someone that wont learn. this hatemonger is a total moron. i cant believe they printed his letter, it was a total waste. if that kid lines up with ANY car from that show he went to hed get his ass handed to him. id lay money on it that any hot rod there, even one saddled with a chevy 350 engine, could absolutely waste his car in any kind of contest he could imagine. id bet hatemonger doesnt know jack about the inside of his engine, his cam info, lift, duration, nothing. maybe he knows how to install a cold air intake and a five inch muffler. thatll do him alot of good against 400 horsepower in a fiberglass 32 ford. good luck ***

22 myself, totally agree with ya. just starting my project.  Those personal comments were a little low too.  I have been to both types of car shows. Big difference, their girls are paid or have boyfriends that are showing cars, the girls that come see the classics come for the cars and aren't paid. and nothing beats the sound of a cammed engine with headers and 3 inch dual exhaust.

yeah, don't give up on our generation yet.... I'm 22 and have owned 11 cars so far... and none of them even daily drivers have been wrong wheel drive.  They're all posers and they don't matter.  Just curious though.... why are cars "saddled" with 350's.... they are in fact, the best overall engine ever.  don't be hating on your own

i was teasing about being saddled with a 350. its all fun.  no sense in having a motor just like the punk next to you has. i dig old hot rods, but only cause i want to steal their ideas for my stang. also circle track, nascar, mud bogging, truck pulls, you name it if its motor powered someone has an idea that might work on my car.  i dont think any of the import "tuners" are pushing the industry forward, you can look back to the past to see where any of their ideas came from. i guess every generation thinks its smarter then the last though. i wish that *** "j bond" luck with his car. i say we find out where hes at and call him out. id put money on any car here against his. 50 dollars says the most ragged out-mullet-hair-owned-fourth owner-no title trans am straight from its parking spot on blocks from the trailer park and blowing blue smoke out the exhaust KICKS HIS ASS. maybe his vtech will save him. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .............also ive come to realize i need a "sleeper", ive been talking to one of the fat balding lamesters about how they used to do it back in the day. everyone should have a geezer tech advisor of their own. theyve been there, done that and have the t-shirt and have worn out that t-shirt and now its a shop rag thats older than me. im going to do a sleeper next. between the insurance, the cops, and tearing up the unsuspecting i think its the only way to go. any ideas? im a ford guy so it hasta be saddled with ford power.

i don't think anyone could have replyied to j. bond's letter as well as you did.  he is just another one of those punks that thinks that fart pipe cars like in the fast and the furious are cool. 50 bucks says he couldn't even tell you what duration is.  hell he probably has to take his shi*box to the shop to get it worked on because he doesn't even know how to check the oil. unless you drive an import for gas mileage, all of the econoboxes with coffee can mufflers should be crushed.

and thanks for trying to set j.bond straight. someone needs too.

This guy is *** retarded.  No one hobby can have identical enthusiasts. I'm 17 not 40. old is a relative term and if nobody pounds this 90 pound pizza face he'll be "old" too someday. If your only making payments on a car you better be able to buy parts to.  I think the finer things he refers to is that crack he's snorting.  In this is the letter of month the e-mail or address isn't included because he's embarassed. You know these kids drive these small cars cause they reflect their IQ, size, and ______ size. You notice in their beloved F&F the Twin Turbo Supra (very top of the import food chain) needs Nitrous to keep up with a Challenger whose motor is failing.  Also in #2 the imports need to cheat to win against the Muscle.  These type of people and their attitudes are why high school is sickening.  Kids don't realize the knowledge they can gain from the "old guys".
