Man, today was GREAT! Slept in a little, got up and washed and detailed my Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, then drove her on a little 30 mile trip to Lynden (moonroof open, windows down, 74* outside, perfect!) for the Can-Am Nationals car show. Met a guy named Jeff from the LS1GTO website for lunch at Bob's Burger's in Lynden. He's got a Yellow 05 GTO (obviously) and a Lucerne Blue 70 T/A (hot!). We walked the show field and looked at EVERY car, there had to be 700-800 of them! (And only one AMC, a clapped-out 73 Javelin 304) There was a perfect 69 Carousel Red Judge, a unrestored red on red 70 AAR Cuda, a MEAN flat black Studebaker with electric cutouts, a red on black 69 440+6 Super Bee, and my favorite from the show, a 69 Chevy Biscayne 2-door post, in white with a bench seat, 427 4-Speed car! It even had it's original build sheet and engine still! Walked the swap meet afterwords and grabbed a Matchbox and a slot-car Turbo Coupe to add to the collection. So I drove the LONG way home (Old Fairhaven Parkway) and managed to dust all 4 doors off of a red GTP Supercharged. So I get home and grab some dinner before jumping in the truck and heading down to Skagit Speedway. Watched the mini's go at it as well as some Sportsman and 360 Sprint Cars, followed that up with a little Outlaw Hornets race (4-cyl n/a cars with no rules racing for a trophy, LOTS of carnage). The field was 20 cars at the start, 15 laps later there were 6! Watched a Dale Earnhardt look-alike Cavalier burst into flames, a Pinto Wagon eat the wall HARD, and a 86 Mustang totaling the snot outta some old Toyota (Mustang was totaled too). Capped all of that off with a demolition derby! Saw a Ford Tempo take out 7 other cars (Marine just back from Iraq, he had some "aggressions" to take out!). Came home via Highway 99, "Chuckanut Drive" with a Frozen Coke in hand. What a GREAT car day! Wow - I know all those places. You live in my neck of the woods, and that would be a fantastic day for any car nut. I love all those things - races included. Roundys are where I got my start with racing down in Spanaway. That track is gone now. The 1/4 mile I am learnig in my older age, but still having fun. Most of my family live in the Bellingham, Lynden, Ferndale and Laurel (north Whatcom county) areas. Small world. I will be at the Good Guys at Puyallup this year. Drop me a line if you plan to attend as I will have my '61 Olds convertable there barring rain.
