Are you aware that in 1978 Fairmont also came with a 302 small block Ford as an option?...this is a easy swap....as for the book which are you after because the parts stores have a manuel on this car,or are you looking for the book that came in the glove box when the car was new?

I was aware of the fact that the cars coming with a 302 thats what gave me the bravery and the idea to do the swap, also I was talking more along the lines of a chilton book or likewise.

I would check ebay for a factory manual. It will probably cost more but I have found that you usually get what you pay for. I checked Helm Inc.s web site and they don't show a manual for your car (probably too old). You might want to call Helm or check with your local Ford dealer. I would also make sure you get all of the manuals - many times the electrical and polution control parts of the manual are in separate books.

Autozone either has that book in stock or can get it for you!
I had purchased one about 5 years ago at that store,I had a Mercury Zepher(same thing as Fairmont) I had a 351 -W I was going to drop in it BUT a tree destroyed it in a wind storm...too bad the car was almost perfect...at any rate...try auto zone, not sure where mine is but just in case you can`t get one I`ll look for mine

If you have a "Bookmans" then they might have it. I get almost all my car literature there. It is a used book store, so now i have Chilton's from 1945 through 1998 on all american cars, for much less then they would have cost me new. Mopar or Nocar

No store with that name in these parts (Western New York) but I appreciate your concern Miranda-Man.
It`s people like you & Silver Buick as well as others that make this forum work so well.
Thanx......Dave G(sideoiler

that's true, I am very grateful. Also I was wondering about if a fox body mustang k-member would fit(an aftermarket tubular one)?

The stock mustang parts should bolt straight onto the Fairmont.. check out this excerpt: "The Fox bodied Mustang was introduced in 1979. The Fox platform was shared with the '78 Fairmont and Zephyr sedans, and later with the Capri, Cougar, Thunderbird, LTD, Marquis, Lincoln Continental, and Mark VII. Front suspension was modified McPherson struts with coil springs. Rear, a four-link suspension with shock absorbers and coil springs. Supposedly, the Fox platform began its long life in '73-74 as a concept for a smaller Mustang. The Mustang II, based on the Pinto chassis was merely a bridge to the new chassis. The Fox platform was first used in the '78 Fairmont and Zephyr sedans due to Ford's need to meet the Japanese competition and improve the economy of its offerings. These models were replaced by the Taurus/Sable FWD models in the mid-'80s. The current Mustang is still based on a modified Fox platform. This will change in '04-05 when the Mustang will be built on the Jag S-Type/Lincoln-Mercury LS. Thus will end the Fox Chassis' quarter of a century's service to FMC." This was quoted from the website.. http://www.georgecushing.net/FoxBody.html ... which may also provide more of the technical info you want. The mustang exhaust should also work, but you might need to extend the final exit length a bit to suit the longer rear end of the Fairmont. If I'm not mistaken, a fox mustang dash should also bolt it too.. make your own Fairmont LX or GT.. with a set of 10 hole rims, flowmaster exhaust, etc. Cool concept! Good luck with your car! (I was entertaining similar thoughts with an old fox-LTD v-6 car I had.. An "LTD LX" ... **LOL**)
