Frieburger leaving CC ?

Here's the same post I made ot hotrod.com: Thanks for the concern, guys. No, I'm not leaving. I guess my editorials in CC and HRM this month must have been pretty unclear. To straighten things up, here's the deal: I'm Editor In Chief of both HRM and CC. The editors are Rob Kinnan and Doug Glad, respectively. All that changed is that Kinnan got his own column in HRM and Doug Glad will be writing the editorial in CC; I no longer have my own column in CC. That's all that changes. Everyone is doing the same jobs and the magazines stay the same way they have been. DF

thank God david. you had me, and evidently a few others scared. we all remember the last time you jumped ship and left us all wondering what to do. i think glad will do a good job. but i dont think theres anyone else who will get as dirty pulling some worthless motor out of a worthless car just to put it in another worthless car as you. thanks for putting car craft back in the junkyards and under cars on jack stands where its supposed to be at. and myself, as well as few others will miss your front man editorial also. just dont forget us, and keep glad in line. i mean anyone can order a new motor and stick in his car that someone else restored. we need more dirt under the fingernails, obscure stuff to keep our appetites satisfied.

I agree. Jeff Smith is a class guy. He spent much time with me and friends preparing my 440 Dart story for Oct issue. One of my friends tried to persuade Jeff to put his son's car in Car Craft and Jeff listened patiently and respectfully. He must get all kinds of stories thrown at him once people know he is at CC. Where can you find anyone else with his general knowledge of all things on wheels plus his specific knowledge of almost any technical performance subject. Jeff IS Car Craft as far as I'm concerned.

I'm glad you see it the same as me. Maybe thats because we have both spent time with Jeff and got to know him instead of just reading what he wrote and being critical of it.

I guess understanding your demographics thoroughly pays dividends. congrats on that new editor in chief gig...does it pay to be an actual part of the demographic David?.....although I think Magneto may be closer to my personality...except for the sheep of course................

I'm another one who had a sick feeling in my gut that you might be leaving. Glad you're not. CC is one of two mags that I read. The other is HPP. I really like where you've been taking this mag. It's getting rarer all the time to see anything but run of the mill bellybutton builds anywhere & budget building is almost a dirty word anywhere else. The readers pages & humor make the mag for me.

I have to say the only reason I read Hot Rod for awhile was because of Freiburger. The Cheap Thrills article was the best thing ever in Hotrod. I then loved him at CC and even liked in when The King took over. I still think the reason The King got booted was because he had the temerity to say that the Fox body Mustang was going to be the new Camaro and upset alot of advertisers apple carts. Smith stunk but , I have to admit he was more than willing to step up and face the music. I sent a letter to CC faxed in with a long list of complaints and even asked for CC to cancel the rest of my subscription that runs until 2008. Smith wrote me back by hand a letter asking me to please let him know what I would prefer to see in the Magazine . Quite honestly I was flabbergasted. I told him what I think and it was not favourable to his style of writing. I am a Ford guy but also like seeing a mix of different makes in the magazine. I loved the intervention article not because it was about a Camaro that was a sidlight to a great article that basically said fix those damn things and drive them. No matter the car you get alot more interested in working on it if you can drive the damn thing. But I digress. I will miss Freiburger at the helm but perhaps Glad with his AMC leanings can be coerced into using a hose clamp for a tranny mount as well. We stil have Magnante and his ramblings plus Krass and Bernie . Now all we need is a rule that says Smith is forbidden to do a tech article, or featurepiece on any Chevy for two years and any Camaro or Chevelle for five. That might make up for things a bit .

Speaking of tech, wouldn't it be nice to get Marlon back? Even this new ploy of getting all the big guns to answer tech questions doesn't match his style.

Do you guys remember the kind of stuff Smith had in the magazine before Freiburger got back. It was expensive cars with big bling bling rims. He knows his stuff really well, but he can take that trash somewhere else, it doesn't belong in car craft

I have to admit that while Smith was at the helm, I was losing interest in CC & was nearly at the point of filing it under pointless & stop buying it when Frieberger came back.

I read the editorial parts and there was no confusion till I read this post when I got back from Vegas. By the way I'm glad you got to keep the suburban. As Editor in Cheife you should still put in a personal note on ocasion I think it is what makes both mags seem much more real as they do not always relate to cars, just sorta life in general as a car guy. Thats what keeps it real.

I agree Freiburger should have like a once a quarter or half year editorial in both just to keep us grounded and help keep it all going in the way we all think it should go. That would be pretty cool.

Thanks for the concern, guys. No, I'm not leaving. I guess my editorials in CC and HRM this month must have been pretty unclear.
Thank goodness!
Now on a different note, I hear from my boys in the street racing brotherhood in Cali that another track bit the dust. Carslbad. And that LA County raceway has only a few months left before it's gone also. They have aready dug up the return road and there is a crater next to it. Is it true that Pomona is on the same endangered list also and they want to build a shopping mall there? I also here Paris has a dragstrip now. What happen with Terminal Island, is it going to open? What about racelegal, is it still around? Keeps us informed in the pages of CC would you. Thanks.
