I think you might want to use original factory AMC v-8 crossmembers for the engine and transmission. I think any narrow body AMC car parts will work, (such as Gremlin, hornet, 68 to 70 javelin/AMX, spirt, etc. My cousin my have these parts for sale, as well as the narrow body width AMC 20 12 bolt, if you might be interested.. Not sure of gears or centre type, but I can find out if you want.)
The reason you might want to use the V-8 x-mem, is the fact that AMC designed their modern v-8 to that of the small block chevy external dimensions, so you may be able to use the parts with minimal mods.
I've heard of guys using a 6 cyl. x-mem, but they had to do some cutting to get the oil pan to clear. Maybe some AMC gurus might help out on this one. Good luck with your project.

Likely you will have to fab your own, as it is considered a big no-no to put in any other power plant than an AMC engine. You might look online but I kinda doubt anyone mass produces conversion mounts. Keep in mind you will have to also mess with the trans mount/x-mem as well. Do you already have the chev engine? A AMC 360 would be an easy drop in.. (or the much-vaunted 401... if you could ever even find one of those...) by sticking AMC you could avoid some other fab work. Anyway, good luck with your project, no matter which engine you use.

normally i would agree with you, but i have a 96 caprice complete with a lt1 sbc that i bought for $800. i bought the car with the intention to transplant the drivetrain into an older car. its a driver, i've put 7,000 miles on it so far to verify its worthiness. it runs great. now i've found a rust free rambler with the trans and eng missing. i thought the two would go great together. i wanted to try fuel inj on my next car and considering the price i paid for the caprice, i don't think i could buy a comparable amc drivetrain. and i am aware that edelbrock makes a fi setup for amc. i know there will be costs to adapting the sbc to fit but i will end up with a fully intergrated system with trans and a/c for the american.

Cool!, being a huge fan of the big Caprices, I can follow your line of thought. It should really kick some serious ass, being in a car at least 1000+ lbs lighter. I think it would work as long as you keep all the Caprice bits and the computer box tucked away up under the dash. You should seriously consider a rear end upgrade... AMC 12 bolts (Corporate 20) are o.k., but the weak spot is the axle flanges that are splined and keyed to the axle shaft... Lots of power tends to rip the splines right out of them. They do make one piece axles, but why go spending alot of cash?. I heard that a mustang 8.8 is a close fit and alls you should need to do is cut off the mustang mounts and weld on a set of spring perches to suit the AMC leaf spring set-up. Best of all, you can do the 5 lug axle swap and likely bolt back on the original style AMC rims.. nobody will be the wiser. (A Mustang sway bar may also be able to be fitted and maybe even rear discs.. don't the new police crown vics use an 8.8 with rear discs?.. Check it out.. it might work. ) A good place to get ideas for the chev into AMC, is to look for jeep conversion articles/how-to's on the internet. Apparently, the jeep guys do this more often than not. Good luck and post some time slips and pix when you get it done.

Actually adding a sbc into your rambler would be a great idea. We had just recently just complete our trans plant into our 1969 AMC Rambler American. We bought a rust free car with only 14,000 miles and it had the original 6 cyl and the 3 speed on the tree. We pulled all that out and but in a 9" ford and a four link suspension. The we took a early model sbc and made a 383 stroker motor and put the new eldelbroke fuel injection. Behind that we put a TKO tremc 5 speed with a scater shield. The car work out perfect and we took it to the track and it ran in the 11's. We couldnt have asked for a better car.

I know places like Advanced Adapters make motor mounts to put SBC's in Jeeps, which are AMC powerplants. In theory, these mounts might be close to what you need.
