The Boss 429 was technically a Hemi but the only reason it was classified as such, was because the valves were facing each other. And the reason the 340 and 440 beat the Hemi was because of the weight. Ever wonder why they call it the Elephant Motor? Mopar or Nocar

Ok, I'm not trying to hijack this string, but have you looked at the new Car Craft (February issue) They have a spread on Jon Kaase's 815 inch Ford Hemi.
Incedently Ford made two versions of this engine. One was a true hemi amd the other was classified as a semi-hemi as the piston and combustion chamber were modified somewhat.
Car Craft also has an article on the CHEAPEST BIG BLOCK IN THE JUNKYARD! The Ford 460!
They fall into the anti-Ford myth that you can't get good power from a Ford big block because of the exhaust ports. But! There are several Iron head Fords making big power. You just have to know how to port them. Gee, isn't that what they say about _all_ porting work, no mater what the make?
They make 500 hp. with a small cam and then go for a bigger cam (Edelbrock Performer RPM) and jump up to 550 HP.
They also included a side bar about another engine built by JGM that went 642 hp with a comp mech-roller cam.
Just thought you should know.

Well I can sell you parts to build a 393 Ford Windsor cheaper than a 383 Chevy if you already have both motors in hand. I can sell you a kit with a cast crank that is cheaper and uses longer rods to make a 393 Ford Windsor than your 383 Chevy . Why ? The Ford uses stock 302 pistons with a cast crank from SCAT and the Chevy needs a crank AND custom pistons the Pistons cost more and the rotating assembly goes up to where it is over and above the Ford. The 351 w rods are 5.9 + in length and the 350 uses 5.7 rods. So for a cheaper cost I can build a bigger faster engine. Beleive it . Also as far as Jegs and Summit go they often only carry the chevy piece even if the Ford and Mopar stuff is available.

Check out powermaster in Bakersfield for the 393 crank. I bought one and put togerter a 403" Ford with aluminum heads from www.hotrodsusa.com. I have right at $2000.0 dollars in it. I started with a block that had already been preped and bored, it was given to me.

Yeah, they called the Boss 429 the "semi-hemi"
But doesn't anyone remember Ford's 427 SOHC?
Introduced in 1966, it had an opposed vavle, hemi-chamber head bolted to a 427 side-oiler block with a 6 foot timing chain for the overhead cams. Ford tried to race it in Nascar in the 60's but ran into homologation? problems. They were never able to offer it in production vehicles, my guess is due to timing chain strech and other practicality issues, but they did offer it as a crate engine to the public and it cleaned house at the drags for a while.
This information comes from "Ford Performance" by Pat Ganahl.

Oh yeah i do remember them and have even sen some. I worked at a place for awhile in the Late 80's that used to be involved with alot of Ford Speed stuff and they had a few "Cammers" Some pretty wild stuff. The company had done some Funy car stuff back in the 60's and land speed stuff in the 50's and the collection of stuff they had was awesome.

I have seen several 'cammers' and they are great!! They are also several yards wide and weren't put in factory cars as they were developed strictly for racing and NASCAR outlawed them and the Chrysler Hemi at the same time, too bad! Oh yeah, they were outlawed on the drag strips at the same time.
It seems to me that was a terrible waste, they were run in several funny cars and had they not been outlawed, we would be seeing them in the dragsters and funny cars now instead of the Hemi's. They were regularly beating the Hemi's back then.
I have seen several of them and a friend still has one set up on a stand in his shop. The one that I have been wanting to see an article on was in a shop that I took an old clunker to to get running. While I was waiting for the owner to get through with another customer I was looking at a '57' Ford hard top convertable (retractable hardtop ) that had a cammer in it. It was very well done and I expected to see it in a magazine. I never saw anything about it again.
