just wanted to share with all of ya what me and my best friend, Al Schiavo, have done with his 94 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (we are both 25 year olds and Al is Married...so lowbuck redneck hotrodding is the name of the game....)

Which we now affectionatly call a 94 Oldsmobile 442...Son of Hairy (Hairy Hurst Olds...that beutiful monster)

425 cid-4 wheel drive-2 (twin) engines = 442

Al wanted to go faster with his car...stock it ran a 16.9 in the quarter and with the interior fully stripped we managed a 16.5s pass...well i told him about a cool old car...Hurst Hairy Olds

we had aquired a 90 Olds Toronado Trofeo (see we are keeping it all Olds...just corprate engines...lol) with a 3800 LN3 V6...it had been in an accident and we got the car for free (well gas to tow it to his father in laws) well basically we took the front half of the Trofeo and welded it all into the back seat/trunk area of his 94 Olds coupe...

most of the info on what we have done can be found here:

http://www.oldsconnection.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=886

The car has the factory 3100 V6 in the front fully ported and with a high stall converter and a performance rebuild...

The rear engine is a 3800 fully ported etc with a stock 440T4 transaxle...6.9L total...

the car has two seperate shifters, tachs, PCM's etc one Aeromotive fuel pump feeds both engines...and the car is, get this, drivable on just the front engine or with both engines running...the rear trans has a circulation pump so that it can be off and in Neutral while the front engine drives the car...and we have been getting approx 22mpg while driving with just the front engine

and if we ever blow anything up...we can still drive it home...gotta love redundancy

as it sits right now tha car has ran an 18 seconds flat on just the front 3100 and we have klicked off a 13.81 at 98.2 Mph on both engines (96* day with 60% humidity 1.9s flat 60ft times) at US-41 dragway...and the car weighs 4330 lbs with Al in the car and a 1/2 tank of gas...thats pretty fast for such a heavy car that looks completly stock...which has suprised more than a few people on the streets...

The whole car has a little over 11 grand in it (counting purchase price) and has cost a bit over 3500$ to add the rear engine as well as the 10 point rollcage and safety gear....not too bad fer Redneck Engine-uity

here is a Video of the 442 at the track...

future plans include another 3800 for the front (7.6L whooohooo!) and Turbocharging both engines...but now that ZZP performance has a twincharged 3800 car in the 9's...we may supercharge and Turbocharge the engines...

god i love this stuff...let me know what ya'll think...

Regards, James Williams and Al Schiavo

Pretty cool.

I read about a dual engine Hyundai Tiburon running on alchohol.

How does the rear transaxle keep from burning up in neutral?

How is cooling with the rear motor?  Is there some sort of grille?

i dont think that the Tiburon was running on alky...but it was just over 600 Hp total...two turbocharged 4 bangers...

I am in comunication with a gentlman from canada who's putting two DOHC SHO engines/manual transaxles into a Mercury Topaz...called the SHOpaz...

more info on that car here: http://tempotopaz.com/main/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewforum&f=3

the rear transaxle doesnt burn up in Neutral because there is a Trans circulation pump that lubricates everything while the rear engine is off and in Neutral...this is the exact same pump that some people install on their vehicles that they flat tow behind their motorhomes... she has over 500 miles on it so far with just driving with the front 3100 no problems whatsoever...

the rear engine has its own cooling system...right now its a heavy brass 350 sbc Van radiator with an electric fan...all of it in the rear engine compartment...it gets air from under the car....absolutly no problems cooling the rear engine so far...but we plan on installing a smaller aluminum radiator to lighten her up some

Glad ya like her...BTW one of our first vids is in the readers rides live section here at carcraft.com (posted it before we had a chance to take the 442 to the track)

How does the rear engine keep from wanting to walk over the front engine? Very cool idea, definitely major respect for trying ti.

What about two supercharged 3.8L motors? Woooooooo

Both engines are factory rated at 160Hp...though the 3800 has a little bit more Tq than the 3100...and besides all new gaskets and the porting and polishing with backcut valves... they are factory stock engines

both engines srive the car just fine and dont push or pull the other...the Tq converters are the great equalizer...but beyond that each engine accelerates approx half of the 4330lb vehicle weight...the stronger engine accelerating a slightly larger amount of the vehicle mass...

in physics an object of a certain mass with two sources of energy accelerating it tend to split the mass in proportion to the "thrust" provided by the engines....basically a 100kg mass with two engines (propulsion) with one producing 60kg of thrust and the other producing 40Kg of thrust...the stronger engine will accelerate a larger portion of the mass (60Kg) than the smaller engine does (40Kg)...this is overly simplified but you get the idea...

the ultimate goal is to have Two Turbocharged 3800's in the car (adios 3100!) plenty of the 3800's are making over 450 Hp at the crank turbocharged and there are 2 high 9 second 3800 powered FWD cars out there (GrandPrix's) one is Twin turbocharged making over 750 crank Hp (built by Stattama and ZZP performance-9.7's at over 144) and the other is a twincharged engine...a Turbocharger feeding an M90 Eaton Blower it was built by ZZP....

sooo at some point we will be seeing what a pair of 450Hp Turbocharged 3800's can do for our 1/4 mile times...all the while the 442 looks completly stock...from the outside...we've hidden the rollcage good enough that you have to look fer it to see it....

if we only had the money for Two of the Stattama/ZZP powerplants....i would love TWO 750+Hp V6's...lol but this is a redneck lowbuck project so we have fabricated and made almost everything ourselves...and I will be doing the Turbocharger fabrication this winter...and hopefully we can drop another 3800 in the front at the same time...

gotta love Redneck Engine-uity....

Regards, James and Al

I reread the Tiburon article about the 2002 ultimate street car challenge.  On the emmissions part of the scoring they wrote "

3 Hyundai Tiburon 80 Methanol burned our eyes, but HC meter liked it

"

Here is a link to the madness:

http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/features/0203scc_uscc1/

Here is what they wrote about the drag portion for the Tiburon:

"Like Bennett, Michael McIntyre brought his Hyundai to the contest for the tests of brute force. After dominating on the dyno, all eyes were on the Hyundai at the drag strip. Watching him drive around the burnout box and roll quietly up to the start line, it was easy to see what a potent street racing weapon this car could be. With a complex and mellow drone from its single exhaust pipe and only a minor protest from the front tires, the Hyundai shot off the line with startling speed. Sixty miles per hour came in a shocking 3.33 seconds; the quarter mile was done in 10.96 seconds at 128.79 mph. McIntyre made his point in one run, he didn't bother to make a second."

Here is a picture of it rotating in a circle doing a burnout with the front tranny in reverse and the rear in drive:

I'm not a ricer, but that car is pretty cool.
