ok i got in a arguement with a kid the other day he was trying to tell me that u couldnt put a set of heads from a 305 on on a 350 or heads on a 327.he says it u will blow the *** out of the motor is this possibel.i dont think its whould make a difference on what heads u put on except the different chamber sizes and compression .also he says there is no way a small block can beat a big block

I put 305 heads on my 350 several years back.they worked fine.If you do, 305 heads have 58cc combustion chambers. That requires 9:5.1 compression slightly dished pistons. Different heads have circulation set ups.I would use intake gaskets for the heads you are using. 350 heads flow air better than 305. Also,If using 305 heads install new valve springs,as this can prevent valves from floating when winding R.P>M's. PS I would stick with 350 heads for power and low octane consumption.with gas at 3.45 per gallon Yes,considering above recommendations.  You can use 305 heads.

Also,to zags86transam. Some 90's and later v8's have centerbolt heads that bolt straight down through intake vertical into the heads. if this is the case, you will need to use heads, intake, valve covers, plus matched accy's.Center bolt valve covers have bolts that screw down in middle of cover. You may want to check this out.

Big blocks have larger bore cylinders, with different strokes, and capability of bigger explosions, resulting in more torque and power. I still like power and durability of 350. They are cheaper to build. Horse power converts to money depending on what you want, and are willing to spend. Over and out for the night, carfulmechanic. Hope this helps. Post back if more help is desired.

I just had to comment on the smallblock can't beat a bigblock statement that your friend made.  Granted, it happened over 30 years ago, but it illustrates the point.  I was riding shotgun in my friend's '70 Nova SS with a 300/350, M20 4spd, and 3.55 posi when we hooked it up with a potent '70 Chevelle SS with a 350/396, M20 4spd, and probably a 3.31 posi (not sure about the ratio).  We used to drag race on a fairly accurate 1/4 mile stretch of highway outside of our town on some very good and sticky blacktop.  My friend was kind of wary of taking on a 396 Chevelle (actually a 402 in 1970) with his Nova, but I convinced him it could be done since his car probably weighed in at least 800 lbs. lighter than the Chevelle.  So we did it, and the Chevelle was history after the 2nd to 3rd shift for both cars.  We probably beat the guy by about 2 to 3 car lengths from a heads up start, and that ain't too bad for a 350 Nova.  I should mention that the Chevelle had a functional Cowl Induction setup and that both drivers were pretty good with a clutch and 4spd.  Remember, this happened at least 30 years ago when cars like these two were still fairly common on the street and leaded ethyl gas was about 50c/gal.  I've seen the same thing happen on other occasions, and I've done the same thing myself in my '67 Nova SS with a 327/350 , M20 4spd, and 3.73 posi.  Its really more a matter of power:weight than anything else, and I sure wouldn't want to take on a bigblock Nova or Camaro with a smallblock Chevelle.

TO vurtok. Can you tell me,if both cars had same weight, trans, and rear end set up with identical slicks and 3,500.00 invested in motors. Which would have best shot at winning. I still likes 350's. Thanks for your advice. Eager to learn.
