Just have to put my two cents in the 307 discussion. The world does not revolve around big cubic inches. Indy car engines run in the 200+ cubic inch area and run 700+ horsepower. Rice burners running 9's in the quarter.Does everyone have to have a 350? Don't get me wrong, ive built many 350's but also have built that terrible old 307 too. if you compare blocks they are a 350 with a slightly smaller bore, everythig else is the same. World products makes a fantastic SR torker head just for small bore small blocks and they really wake up the engine with 170 intake flow and 58cc chambers, the right cam and carb and they will run great.when first introduced the 307 was noted as an econo motor, bad heads, bad cams, but great gas milage. but then again a lot of 350's were dogs too, so dont bad mouth them, if you want more power, do something about it. with the price of gas maby it's time to downsize and go with a lighter body, remeber---power to weight. Thanks

I had a 307 in a 69 Chevelle one time. It was horrible. 2 bbl, low compression, smoked real bad. I rebuilt a 327 and put that in the car and the difference was like night and day. The 327 did have pocket ported double hump heads, Edelbrock RPM intake, 1-5/8" headers, Edelbrock 600 carb, and Summit 224/234 cam though. I sold the 307 to my buddy and he put another set of heads on it because the valve guides in the old heads were shot and that stopped the smoking. He also put a performer intake, comp 270 cam, and a Holley 600 carb on the motor. It was a lot better, but still nothing special. The 307 just didn't have the low end torque that is so essential in a street car. I had 273 gears too so you can only imagine how much I wanted a bigger motor.

I had a 307 in a 75 monte-carlo. With 194/160 valve 350 heads. Mild(440lift)cam. Qjet 4barrel carb. with headers and 2.5" Duals. This was in 1985. My car ran awesome. I sold the car still running great with 175,000 miles on motor, changing oil every 2500 miles.

lol it all depends on what you do with it really, like everything else.  ive seen 355s that can barely roll tire too you know.  i got an 82 cutlass with a 307 and im pushing 425hp at 8 grand,  but only 275 foot pounds of torque.  the difference is, is a crank from a 283 and a .125 overbore  with dome pistons and 5.9 rods to bring the compression back up,  giving it roughly 302 cubes instead of 307.  i kinda went backwards and destroked the 307.   i got 2.14 differential and i can still outrun most of the other smallblocks

I got a 307 in my garage. Its from a 80s monte carlo. Its like a new engine with about 70k on it.I got it out of my 65 parts car. I'm thinking of getting s10 to stab it into. Would that be a decent engine for a little truck like that. Would it burn them decent or be a real dog?

i also have a 307 from a 69 camaro i was restoring
unfortunatley i had to sell the car, but i had already had the motor rebuilt, so that money is long gone.
i noticed all of you mentioned using 305 heads, but i had once read an article where they used edelbrock e tec heads with similar intake and carb and cam combos and got pretty good results. any comments or opinions

ok i have a 1973 307 that came out of a nova it was built by jegs and i have no clue what was done other than a race cam.i replaced all the gaskets and water pump, oil pump, fuel pump. i have a 1985 gmc truck that has a 350 in it that is wore out and wont pull its self out of its own way. so i wanted to replace it with the 307 thats alot fresher than the 350 but i cant get the timing right the top dead center mark on the harmonic balancer isnt right or even close .i pulled out #1 spark plug and turned the engine over with my finger over hole and when compression blew out i figured that was top dead center but it still didnt fire and run right,it shot fire out of carb .... what to do ...im lost

All these guys, should stand allied against the ford, chrysler, etc menace. I built my 307 in my 69 chevelle, for fun and a learning experience. It is bored .30 over making it a 312cid. It has forged TRW pistons, 64cc heads with 194 intakes and swirl polished SS TRW's. The heads were ported/polished by me, and have guide plates. I put in larger rod bolts, clevite77's and the rotating assembly is balanced. It is a large journal crank, a 350 harmonic balancer, light weight nodular iron GM flywheel, and a high volume oil pump. I am running a solid lifter "fuelie" camshaft, windage tray, 2X roller Timing chain, full length 1.75 headers, and an old eddlebrock C3BX intake, with a HOlley 700 2x pumper. This motor blew the stock 10 bolt, so in went a 12. Also it killed 3 M21's. The car is light with no AC/PS, or P brakes. I could hang even with early 70's 454 vetts. I would almost daily shift at 7000+ becaused I liked the sound and was young. I think it is fun to challenge oneself to not do the norm and see if you can turn around a "Black Sheep". After all an engine is just a pump, and the better the old in and out the more power you can make. Also the car is close to #'s matching, thats why I do not just drop in an LS2.
