the small block chevy engine is the only V8 readily supported by the after market with pre-fab mounts, headers, etc. Any Chevrolet car with a 262, 267, 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, 400 would be a good donor being that all of these are essentially the same engine on the outside. Go to www.s-series.org and visit their forums under V8 Tech for an abundace of info. Or just search V8 S-10 on the interenet. There is a wealth of info on these swaps. Going with a Caddy engine would be cool but not nearly as easy or cheap. A 350 Chevy (as boring as that might sound) would be the ideal choice. They are one of, if not the most common internal combustion engine on the planet. Good cores are cheap and easy to find and complete rebuild kit with new pistons, all bearings, cam, lifters, timing set, etc. are available for under $150.00! If your truck is a 4 cyl you will need to get 2.8L V6 mount pads to bolt to the cross-member. After that you can use Heddman or JTR mounts to go directly to the V8. A lot of people complain about the Heddman shorty headers for this swap, but I have never really had a problem with them. As for your tranny, it will not work in any capacity with a V8. Even if you could adapt it, the relationship would not last long. I am not very knowledgeable about which manual transmissions work with the swap anymore. All of my V8 S truck dealings have been with autos. I have used TH350's which have been alright because my truck was fortunately ordered with optional 3.42 gears. Your truck is probably a 4.11 so you should use a th700r4 or 4 or 5 speed manual if you plan on seeing the highway. A buddy of mine in highschool had one with a super T-10 4-speed, so I guess that's an option. I am not a big fan of TH700's. Just my opinion. I am going on my 7th V-8 year with the factory, unaltered 7.5 inch rearend with no problems. I am running about 325 horse and a little over 400 lb-ft of torque with 235 rear tires.

Since the aftermarket only supports the SBC changeover (As in kits). I would that route. But I would do swap from a similiar year Caprice, Camaro, Vette LT1. Added benefit, it would still pass smog and get great mileage in that little light truck. Obviously, the wiring harness will make it more complicated, but I think the extra effort would worth it in the end.

Ecellent point, I live in Indiana and EPA is still pretty relaxed there. Federally, you want your engine the same year or newer than the vehicle.

thanks to everyone for the help the truck is a secret at the molment that my parents dont know about its actually my dads old truck and its gunna die within the next few years so i have time to get parts i think after seeing a custom one at the mall hes interested and he thought it was a worthless piece of crap only good for basic transportation he didnt believe me at first that people drop v8s in those things as for smog laws where i live i can get away with alot because its a small city and at the molment people are fighting about "loud exaust systems" so as long as its quiet i wont be bothered if we had to pass tests it wouldve failed along with my 70 skylark and my unregistered 72 f350 being used to store old carpet and wood and other crap that has piled up since i got it

If you want a car for it's motor/trans, buy a wrecked one. They are worth less than their weight in scrap. Growing up many of my less than talented aquaintences thrashed their mommy and daddy bought camaros and stangs. Most sold them off for scrap and bought a toyota. My first street race car (A 69 Impala SS) I got it's 600 HP tripower 427/ M-22 4 speed for $2200. It was practically new. The guy I bought it from wrecked the 68 vette it was in on the way home from street racing one night. I'm willing to bet he spent five times that on the motor and trans alone. We had to cut the right frame and suspension off the car to get them out.
