Hello all,
I have a 1971 402, and I'm trying figure out a way to make good power,(425HP at least and 500HP would be better), spending about $5k. Speed-o-Motive has a 396 to 434 stroker kit, but I have never heard of this particular combo. It makes sense, just use a 454 crank, with the right bore and bamo! You have big inch from the mini-big block!
So my question, is this a streetable combo? If so, why doesn't it get used? The price is right, only about $1200 for the kit, about the same at engine shop and I should have a thumping sleeper, right? Maybe that's too simple, but thats why I need some help. It would be going into a 66 Caprice that has the numbers matching 325Hp 396. I want it to look like a 325hp 396, but have some hidden fun stuff. At 4400lbs, the Caprice is no lightweight, but I figure if I can get 400Hp and 400 ft lbs to the wheels, at the peaks, it should move it around pretty well.
I have to stick with the 402 block for now, maybe someday I can build a 496, but as for right now, I need to use what I got. The motor has to be able to run power brakes and support all the other creature comforts, (this car will be a daily driver and family cruiser so it has to be comfortable for the Mrs. and baby), can anyone help! The only build I could find that gave me what I wanted was almost 8k! I'll have 10k for the whole driveline!
Anyway I know the readers of CarCraft know their stuff, after all it is a craft!! Thanks in advance! Jesse

496 BBC Chevy Stroker 1100 Horsepower |
496 BBC Stroker 1100 Horse Power!
This motor was built by BMS Racing engines and dynoed at a peak of 731 off the bottle. It comes complete from breather to pan. The engine was dynoed with stock BB2 plus heads which have since been ported to flow from stock 358 CFM to a current 403 CFM. The motor was pulled to freshen it up and have the new coated pistons installed. It has not yet been dyno'ed with the ported heads and intake but it should produce some great numbers. Although this engine produces numbers over the top it is still streetable!!

Or anywhere else for that matter! What's the catch? The block has inserts BUT they haven't been a problem and it has ARP Head studs so they shouldn't be a problem either. I am listing this motor for a good friend and have personally been in this motor and can verify that it has all that's listed...and more like a brand new Coyles Hex adjust timing chain, new oil pump...you get the idea. It's ALL there and I can almost guarantee an 8 second Nova or Camaro with this setup, and it's STREETABLE!!! Dyno sheets will come with the engine upon purchase. If you have any question please call Eric at 1-479-524-5655 before 5 pm. -Thanks and good luck!! |

I have found many small block kits for a 434, but speed-o-motive does have a big block 396 to 434 kit. To my understanding, (the small bit I have on this), you put a 454 crank, unsure of the bore. Anyway, thanks for your info, and cool motor but too much for me right now. Jesse

I did not know that, sounds like a cool set up if you have a 396 block. The bore on a 396 is 4.094 and a .060 over 396 with a 4 inch 454 crank would be a @434.

Yeah I talk to to speed-o-motive again today, and they say that the combo makes lots of tourqe, because of the stroke. I guess they build quite a few for boats and sleeper camaro's. Might be a cool build, eh?
Thanks Jesse

I think it is a great combo for a 396. Lots of torque.

Well thats what I heard, but before I do that I am going to talk with a machine shop that is supposed to be one of the best around up here and see if I can get what I'm looking for out of the 3.76 stroke. If it does work out, then I may still consider the 434 kit. I will be sending updates! Thanks Jesse
